Hey guys

sorry I dont know a great deal about the workings of a turbo or the ways to fix things.

Few days ago I started the car up and heard anpleasing sound coming from engine. I worked it out that it was coming from the turbo, a very metal sound. After taking pipes off I found that the shaft in the turbo has no in and out play, but it has a fair amount of movement up and down and that there is a lot of scratches on the inside from spinning. Some of the fins seem to have worn a way a little bit too.

What is the decision on this, do I have to replace the whole turbo, or can I replace the shaft or what? Any help is very much appreciated as I want to try and get car back on the road in a few weeks suppose to be driving to qld

also what do I need to do to find any shavings, metal that may have come off the turbo and is in the engine somewhere, anything else I need to replace so this doesnt cause anymore damage?

cheers guys

theres no cheap fix unfortunately. rebuilds are around $1600 not including housing. get flapper mod while your at it. second hand turbo is around a grand + flapper mod. who knows what its done.

Sorry to say, but if you can't afford to fix/maintain it... You shouldn't own it.

You shouldn't even consider replacing it with a cheap knock-off china copy turbo, just go out & get a genuine rebuilt or new one when funds permit. You'll also need to take all pipework & cooler etc off & clean them thoroughly to get rid of any schrapnel.

Whilst you're spending money, get an aftermarket oil feed line as has already been mentioned & keep on top of servicing. Treat it like an engine oil filter & change/clean it every service the car to prevent further turbo failures.

Good luck :surrenderwave:
