Yeah I have a similar train of thought as you Phil hahaha. Still, I'd like some one day.

Have just gone and looked at a top quality opal to stick in a bit of metal, thing was stunning, so budget for plates is a long ways away :). My girl has an eye for quality, she picked the biggest $ stone from the 11 on offer. Both very excited as it looked unreal! Anyway back to cars...

Can recommend ABS Auto Service Centres at 40 Hutton St Osborne Park. Brakes guys were champs and fixed up my error - the backing plate was fouling on the slightly larger caliper and dragging on the rotor! Left a nice line on it, heh. All sorted for only an hour's labour and this was basically a walk in by me today. Peter there was very helpful explaining and showing me what was going on...and also let me nuke my lunch in their lunch room just like WA Suspensions :) Just realised I shoulda taken a photo but I was in the middle of a remote job on my laptop at the time anyway in their waiting room.

Had a nice surprise when I ran the jack under, car is higher than before by about my finger width, so maybe 1.5cm. This is a win due to me driving up and down some steep driveways and rough roads. I've bashed my muffler pretty solidly a few times! Better that than a sump though. Pic taken at 6:16pm.

Stats according to willtheyfit.com for the fronts (from 235/45/17 +36 to 145/40/18 +36) - ride height gain is way more than 4.95mm though. Also with a larger diameter wheel the speedo would be reading lower for a given real equal speed so I think they have the calc backwards on the speedo error there?

_________________________Old ________New

So anyway I stuck her on stands, yanked the rear wheels off and noticed the nuts were poking way out on one of them compared to the other. Lay them out and...shown here with lock nut key above the longer set. What the?

Cjo3Ttl.jpg

I remembered about the staggered offset of the FPV rims. Inspected stampings and what do you know. One of my rears is actually a front, oops. Not sure when this got mixed up :) Note "rear use only". This must be to prevent scraping at full lock on bumps or maybe because the 6 pots are even fatter and won't clear? I didn't have any issues running the lower offset on the front for a day at least.

YHAZ4o2.jpg

The front rims are +36.5 like the rest of the Ford range I'm used to:

5MIqZx3.jpg

Poking around with my phone behind the spokes of other wheels (in selfie pic mode very handy, like an offset digital mirror), I found that the driver's front wheel was actually a rear. Gave a nicer fitment hahaha!

uk5geH8.jpg

I fixed this at the end of the job. It also explained the huge gap between rim and Brembo that I had initially (Wow, some of my car has paint on it now, see the speckles! Peeling clear shows me why I don't have painted panels, :P):

yA6YY9n.jpg

Now on to the fun bit. Here's something I never thought I'd be using on my car @_@

WG5YWLn.jpg?1

But the rear brake lines are fixed in this riveted bracket...(thanks to Luke for this major tip, I bought new bits and a rivet gun with 4 sizes included just for this)

Eecyfrw.jpg

Ahhhh. Here's a tip, don't undo the brake line bolt until you finish creating tiny metal flakes. I inspected it closely and all was well but still...sprayed it with my ultra official Bendix brake and parts cleaner spray that Luke is jealous of. Best done before loosening I'd think, and after drilling, to clean all dirt from the area. Wipe down the hard line etc.

One of the bloody caliper bolts was seized nicely so I had to get out the wd40 and let it wick for a bit, still wasn't enough after 10mins so out came my Irwin stuck bolt removers set to avoid rounding the 15mm nut (further) and with some persuasion it gave in. The other 3 came out fine luckily (cleaned them first) as it was getting close to the missus bedtime and I can't bleed brakes alone...was doing this on a work night.

Took both old calipers and rotors off and compared to see if they really were smaller...yep!

Cleaned up the hub face a little (sadly forgot to do the left as I was in a hurry at this point, about 8:45pm). Note the rear cover here with the hole cut out where the caliper goes...

So with the old gear gone I fitted the new calipers up (was a slight biatch too fit around the backing plate but eventually got them on...mmmmm), riveted the brackets in, tightened the 4 caliper bolts and the 2 brake line bolts and got help to bleed all the air out. Jen was nodding off in the drivers seat waiting for me to find my clear tube and a container to drain it into...oops. Was about 10:30pm by the time we finished. Owe her big once again!

Fitted up finally, pic taken at 11:56pm, time was spent messing around figuring out the offset problem mentioned above and removing wheels, refitting etc. Done by midnight is a win for an IT bloke. Even remembered to remove the lock nut key shown here before the test drive...yessssssssssssss!

3oVrj52.jpg

What a mess. Left the gf's car outside for the night, too tired to clean up the tools, hahaha!!!

t81Y2OI.jpg

Did the test drive with the windows up due to the cold. Mistake! If I'd had them down I would have heard the noise of the rubbing backing plate. But that was fixed by the brake shop today so moving right along...

Stopped very nicely nonetheless. Didn't spear off to a side etc and pulled up from 100kmh in about 60 or so meters as near as I can guess from roadside marker posts, let down by the POS tyres and slightly damp roads. Didn't get to slam the pedal down as I could feel the tyres starting to grind on the road despite my best efforts at threshold braking. Will have to try again as reading online I should be under 40m in good conditions as read in these links:

http://www.sdt.com.au/safedrive-directory-STOPPINGDISTANCE.htm

http://www.caradvice.com.au/30255/ford-falcon-xr8-vs-holden-commodore-ss-the-final-verdict/

I'm missing the KU31's badly I must say after driving on these cheapies. Let alone wanting to try some Invos again! Googling Tri Ace Carrera brings first hit of Bob Jane T Marts, the place I saw my first set of Status Grinder rims...erk. From there it descends into Chinese and Russian :)

UzAYAlp.jpg

Honestly I doubt my distances would be improved much at all in normal conditions compared to the stock brakes. Tyres will probably be the deciding factor here, then pad choice. The Brembos and larger PBR rears would be better for soaking up heat from repeated fast stops, or very high speeds such as 230+ in 500m at Wyalkatchem airstrip...

Good on you for taking so many pics.

I'm lucky if I can be bothered taking one at the start and one at the finish !

Yeah can't wait to replace the tyres with some decent ones. On the other hand that means paying for four new tyres so I sort of CAN wait...

And yes stopping to take pics didn't speed things up!

First wash of the new rims today!

Did Luke give you the 5th wheel it will be 36 offset.

Dont lose any of those nuts. Ford want one million dollars each. Welcome to the staggered club.

Did they use that drill to build the titanic

Latest update!

Went to Whoop Ass Wednesday and ran a paltry best of 12.1 at 116mph, which is 5mph down on my previous best mph...trans slipping is robbing me of mph is my thought at the time (also got a 12.4 and 12.5 at 115 etc).

That was my thrird run.

Decided to have one more go after the burnouts...bad idea mate!

Sounded very close to what Phil's ute was doing a couple of cruises ago...flex plate loose.

Babied it home and dropped the car the next morning at XFT :(

Today they had a chance to look at it and this is the message I just got from Simon, MEGA LOLS.
