Hey guys!

A mate of mine had his "check engine light" come on in his 28000km old 5th anniversary GT. the owners manual said something about the error code is due to something wrong with his emmissions? he has had an exhaust mod done, and a tune, all by Ford before he purchased it.

took it in straight away to the dealer, and they did his 30000km and after washing it, it wouldn't start. they said that the ECU had fried and they had to order him a new one, and this was the second one they had in the last few weeks.

anyone else had any ECU problems or anything similar happen to theirs?

Cheers!

I had the engine light come on my FG XR6 turbo about a month ago. Dealer told be the wastegate was having an issue, and got all attacking about getting a flash tune. haven't seen it since. pretty sure they just cleared the error though.

how the fart do you fry a computer during a wash... dealer could be in trouble, high pressure hosing the ECU might not be a good plan!

yep, no idea on how they did it, they didn't leave much details! my guess is as good as anyone else's. probably did wash the engine bay, and some water got in we rekon! well, we'll never know, cause they'll never tell!

Certainly not normal. You'd think after it 'being the second one in a few weeks' they'd figure out that a pressure washer in the engine bay is not a good thing :hiwelcome:

That or they have left some wiring exposed somewhere which is shorting and burning out the ECU.

It's usually the tuner changing things in the tune that don't need changing thus causing error codes to appear. If a dealer plugs into the PCM and reads some random error code they can just wipe it, but if it's written in the tune it'll come back again. Also if the car has non standard injectors and the dealership flashes it back to the stock tune it most likely won't run very well if it even starts at all

In another car I had the mechanic clean up some oil spilt in the engine bay while servicing and shortly after the alternator packed it in. Of course the mechanic was quick to deny anything even though it was fine when I dropped it off.

when I worked at a dealer, we had a fair few coil packs get destroyed when washing under the bonnet. However better to pack up during a service than halfway to Queensland.

however I dare say you should be very gentle with water around any ECU.

well just to update, they rang today and said that the ecu didn't arrive as they thought it would, and that it will be here monday, but he won't get the car till wednesday! suffice to say he is not happy, having payed 80k+ for this car, and he now has to drive a ford focus around! haha! but we think that it was a more serious problem that they stuffed up, and now they're trying to cover it up with this whole "ecu unavailable" song they've been singing. cause we find it rather hard to believe that in the whole state there are no spare ecu's for the GT? do you think there might be some truth to this assumption? have ford mucked up and are just trying to buy themselves some time?
