I thought I would try to help out my fellow forumites in relation to weight loss surgery and tell you my story and the battle with weight loss.

Many people on here have met me and for those that have not, I am 39yo married with 2 boys (5&3) and a baby girl due in 4 weeks. I am 6'5" and weigh 137kg and would consider myself a light drinker and non smoker (I did smoke for 20 years).

My story will be similar to yourself or someone else you know.

As I write this I am sitting in a hospital bed after having Gastric Sleeving operation on Tuesday. This operation will not be familiar to many people, but essentially they cut off 2/3 of my stomach and staple it back together, reducing the volume of my stomach to about a cup of food.

This may seem drastic, but my reasons for this are many.

Earlier in my life I suffered several rugby injuries, including both knees, ankle and neck. I have also broken my back in a fall off a roof.

20 years on this has caused me to reinjure myself whenever I attempt even light exercise.

I was also diagnosed at a type 2 diabetic 3 years ago, with no family history.

People who know me would not say I am extremely overweight, but I was morbidly obese according to the doctors (BMI36).

In 2007 I decided to do something about it and got a Gastric Band done. After 6 weeks on my first visit to the doctors to get the band filled, the band got stuck and I had to be operated on immediately that day as I could not swallow even water.

So band #2 was done and I found it very difficult to live with. You had to make sure you chewed up everything well or it got stuck and you would have to puke it up. If you know anyone with a band, they have to suffer by not eating many foods like breads and meats. The comedian Mikey Robins got a band and he lost weight on it, but he is now putting it back on again. This is now becoming common. Many banded patients are finding they are either cheating their bands by eating liquid or meltable calories (beer/chocolate/etc) or they cannot eat properly and are getting depressed.

Myself I lost about 20kg on the band, but found it very difficult to live with. After speaking to my doctors, they suggested I investigate the Gastric sleeve operation.

After extensive reading of forums and speaking to a few people I realised that this could be the solution to my weight problem. So that brings me to now. After 4 days I feel great, but a little sore. I will be on liquids only for the next week and then mushie foods (pureed and soups) for the next 4 weeks. With this operations under normal eating, you will lose up to 10kg per month until your body gets down to its ideal weight. For me this is about 95-100kg.

It is far more difficult to cheat this method as you physically cannot eat more than an entree` sized meal. This operation will also stop me being a diabetic either now or very shortly. I have not been on my extensive diabetic medication for the past 4 days, yet my BGL is sitting in a normal range.

By no means am I trying to encourage people to just go and get the operation, but I thought that if you were thinking about it or you had questions, I may be able to help as I have been there and done it.

I will be leaving hospital tomorrow for a few more days recovery before going back to work.

Good luck mate. My brother in law just got a band so I'll get him to read this, I on the other hand need a stomach extension by the sounds of it.

Best of luck Zapper, hope it all works out for you.

Stupid question but does it remain small indefinitely or does the stomach stretch back to its original size eventually?

All the best Zapper, how do you deal with hunger pangs? The way I love me food don't know if I could cope mentally.

Probably should start quiting booze , smokes and sheer piggery of everthing in general I guess as a first step.

Ironically I had a full fitness( stress test) and bloodwork up recently and came back like a fit 30 year old blink.gif

Obviously the machines were crocked.

Looks like I will continue my relentless and remorseless pursuits for a bit longer, but yeah, I would like to be a Dad for my kids for a bit longer.

Pretty hard to go from a life of living at redline to a complete stop thoughblush.gif
