I'm playing with the idea of having a PWR liquid/air 6"x8" barrell intercooler that's rated at 447kw for the TTG and was curious for some thoughts on it! I have around 7 to 8 inchs of clearance under the bonnet so pipe work size can be pretty big,5" for the IP from the standard air box position to the turbo with a K&N filter is what I have in mind. The length to the throttle body wont be very long so what size pipe work would be suitable to use with the barrel, there probably will only be two bends a 90 on the hot side and maybe maybe not a 45 on the cold side. The scoop will be putting air in over the throttle body area, would this affect the thermo fans to much. All this because out here ambient temp ranges between 35 to 50 degrees in the summer.A Mace Engineering insulator under the plenum will lift the throttle body 25mm,keep it cooler and lengthen the intake runners and give more volume in the plenum. Thank you for your thoughts Alan..

I used a factory water to air setup on my twin turbo Toyota Corona that I built a few years ago. The engine was a 2.0L inline 6 with an intake similar to our Falcon I6. The engine came facotry with either a air to air or water to air intercoolers and I used both but settled on the water to air for some stealth.

From my experience, Id stick with an air to air intercooler setup. The water/air setup had consistant performance, had very short plumbing and was neat and tidy but was far more time consuming to setup and was not a set and forget installation. Im sure the barrell units are far more efficient than the factory toyota water/air unit I used but myne suffered from heat soak as you would expect from sitting on top of the engine. To make the most of them you should try and get them away from on top of the engine although a good volume of water and a large water heat exchanger (I used the largest PWR unit) in front of the radiator will keep them cool inside. I didnt notice any difference in reduced lag by using the short plumbed water/air intercooler in my setup.

Im not trying to put you off, its always good to try differrent things which could start a new trend. Just if I did it again, id go the front mount. There are plenty of fmic kits out there that work well and will be cheaper and less hassell.

Thanks for that Pube that's handy to know.I know there's not alot of these set ups but there is a fair chance that skippy would poke his head in the grill and being 700k's from anywhere and not having boost, would that get me very far. I also have to drive on the desert dirt so I got to take it easy, the gas tanks and missus makes sure of that.Speaking of the missus had to swap the Patrol for the TTG ,roughness for comfort, dirt for tar but at the moment were still out in the bloody sticks!Anyway I love my fords and theres plenty of playing with to be done by looking at the rides around us.

do you do the welding on that setup? looks like some sweet beads....I had been toying around with a water - air setup for the falcon but I think its more trouble then its worth. intercooler is simple and does the job, longer piping might make it a bit less responsive but you gota give them v8 boys a bit of a chance;)

HaHa there,s a few of them out there that would make us work for it.The Territory has a shhhit load of room under the bonnet but what I would like to know is if I was to go ahead with this ,by using the stock turbo what size ICP would I use on each side of the barrel. Can there be anything that's to big! Here's a pic of the airbox mod to draw from behind the head light using the ED's airbox pipe work turned around.

Hi Al,

Nice planning, water to air is very efficent but by its nature, more complicated. Just a thought, would it be better to isolate the entire intake manifold with a Mace spacer between the manifold and head?

Howz it going Cobramad, I think they're about $130 and are a easy mod to lengthen the runners to.I started reading Brian's write up from ARE about intercooling and have to read it again to take it in properly, but wouldn't it be interesting to see what the water/air could do on the turbo 6 with a combination of LPG or unleaded fuel!

Easy sunshine, I'd be happy getting good results with just one fuel, obviously the cheapest and safest one with the most suitable octane rating, but I admit, I do like your thinking!

I've been looking at the garrett web site and they reckon that IC's for normal street applications with air/air range between 60% and 70% efficiency and water/air between 75% and 95% then there's the ice!
