if theres play back and forward then it needs new thrust washer, if theres not much up and down then you wont be able to see much rubbing because its not rubbing up and down but it will be rubbing on the inside of the compressor housing, if you pull the housing off you will see it....the oil on the inlet is just from the breather, if the oil is after the compressor then the seals are shot too....I had oil pissing out of both sides of the cartridge on my bike(dump pipe and boost piping)

you might get away with pulling it apart and putting in a new thrust washer, im not sure about the inside workings of bb turbo though I have only pulled bush ones apart and changed bushes

p.s. that's intake side of the compressor not the outlet as you called it.....

Garrett BB turbos use angular contact ball bearings to take up thrust loads so they don't have thrust bearing/washer's like journal bearing T04 T03 turbos.

What was that banging noise when you were playing with it with your fingers?

Was it in the back ground or was it happening when you pushed and pulled on the compressor wheel?

By the sounds of it and the amount of play looks like it has collapsed bearings but I am not going to even try to give an exact diagnosis over the internet. Best get it into a turbo shop for a look.

hahah yeah the clunking noise was in/outwards movement... doesn't sound healthy at all does it

I took it in to the shop a few weeks ago now which I mentioned above haha.. he reckoned it was all within tolerances, but the bearings are worn, no visible damage to the impeller so he said about $800 to rebuild it... hopefully everything goes to plan.. he even said I could drive it and it should be fine for a while..

but the car is now off the road for: turbo rebuild, new oil feed, oil temp and pressure gauges, full slotted rotors and pads, zf service and hopefully a tune pending on the tax return...

Just out of curiosity what turbo shop did you take it to that told you it was within tolerances?

Adelaide Turbo Services.

his exact words were 'its a ball bearing turbo so they have a bit more play than other turbos, but its within tollerances'

he said he rebuilds 1 xr6 turbo a week, and hes a distributor for garrett...

I would be worried if he thinks that is within tollerances. shaft off centre is not within tollerances.
