Lauching reasonbly hard yesterday with TC on, dialed up 3k rpm, let the clutch out quickly but didnt drop it, the clutch slipped as if id only let it half out before it finally grabbed. Unfortunately, by the time I realised what had happened 3 seconds of clutch frying had been done and I left with a pile of clutch smoke behind me. First time that's happened....

Tested it down the road, same thing, this time aborted before any damage. THEN I TURN TC OFF and it was perfect launch after launch..... not sure whats going on there...

Anyways, now my nice opt 3 clutch is rough as anything on take off, and feels more spongy in the pedal... I m sure I've wiped a few thousand kays off its life. Im sure it will smooth out over time with some use....hopefully...

Looks like I might be off to Mal Wood to figure out why this happened...

To clear up confusion: This was not on some drag strip or street trsting, this is while I was doing a 3 point turn, completed the turn was launching hard as traffic was almost on top of me.

I wasnt out for big 0-100 numbers, just launching hard like anyone else would in the same situation.

The testing I did down the road after the initial slip was for diagnostics. Unlike some, I dont wish to drive everywhere with TC and DSC off in case I want to have a fully sick launch..

LOL Something has to be wrong. I had 350rwkw on a Mal Wood Option 3 clutch and couldn't break it!

It was a launch - doesn't matter if you sugar coat it. You dialled up 3 grand and let her go.

It has absolutely nothing to do with a "fully sick" launch as you put it. It is all about motor/oil pump gears/CV's/clutch/diff and drive shaft preservation. If you go around giving it massive hits with TC on and the car is franticly trying to stop the wheels spinning (when it can't) it puts massive un-needed pressure on every component including the clutch! It’s one of the worst things you can do to your car, and the motor especially.

And with 250 odd rwkw, I’d be fairly confident that you could get up to speed with flowing traffic without a 3k launch...

I'm sure MW will be understanding when you tell him that you did a 3k launch with TC turned on, and the clutch started to slip....

Having a bad day or something exar? Do you think I just drive around all day 'giving massive hits with tc on'?

I had to move quickly, I'm not about to go through a checklist of settings for a perfect launch including turning off TC while a truck is bearing down on me. I just got some revs and let the clutch out like ANYONE IN THE FRIGGEN WORLD would in the same situation. I had to move right at that second, my brain just instinctivly gave it more than a normal take-off. Im assuming it was about 3k, it was possibly less. that's not the problem, the problem is it didnt grab and it should have. TC on or not.

I know the Option 3 can hold much much more than that, its a strong clutch with a fantastic reputation which makes me think something is not right in the whole setup.

I'm sure Mal will be very helpful if I need to take it to him... I'm also sure he wont critisize my driving and lecture me on TC...

ive done something similar to this I had a few under the belt and needed to the car out of the back shed for my brother, dialled it up with TC on and dropped it no wheel spin hmmm in my drunkin stupidity not realising TC was on gave it more revs and tried again :roflmbo:. I had the same symptoms as u have + a smell that lingered in the A/C vents for over a week. The roughness went away aswell as the smell. A few weeks later and it only a memory.

Has since smooth out back to normal after less than 200kms of driving. Damage wasnt too bad at all.

The only reason I don't drive everywhere with TC off is that it disables the DSC aswell which I prefer to have on for those just-in-case moments. Especially when my wife is driving. Anytime I intend to launch hard or drive hard, TC is turned off.

For those rare occasions like this one, its something that I will have to deal with at the time. A slipped clutch is not a big price to pay for avoiding an accident.
