My engine has recently developed a high pitch noise mostly noticable at idle. You can hear it inside or outside the cabin with the bonnet closed. Its not turbo related as I can make out its comming from around the throttle body/inlet manifold and towards the front of the engine. Almost sounds like a small electric motor just about to explode...

The first time I heard it was when I was giving her a hoot on my favourite private rd. It started very loud but became a bit quieter when I began to slow down and cruise to let the engine cool. Now its just makes the noise when you drive to the shops. I have checked all plumbing but I cant pin point where the hell it is comming from.

Anyone experienced a similar noise?

does it change witht he rpm or stays consistant ?

Could be the serpentine idler tensioner if it changes with the rpm.

When I noticed the noise initially, the noise seemed to be there when I was coasting then dissappeared when you touchted the throttle slightly. I changed both idler and tensioner pulleys about 6 months ago but I will remove the belt tomorrow to rule that out.

I believe my alternator is shagged, I get a whine or high pitched squeel all the time from it and believe it happened when my water pump shat itself and poured over the alternator?

I get massive alternator whine through the cars electrics now also.

Sounds to me like a bearing has shat itself in one of the pulleys along the belt.

Get a long screwdriver and hold the tip against each area (tensioner, water power, alternator, power steering etc) you should be able to find it quickly.

If it was a boost leak it would probably be getting louder not disappearing as revs climb.

Just an idea

Can't believe there's been no mention of coil packs or valve springs...usually that's the answer to everyone's problems!
