Off-duty policeman 'clocked at 160 km/h'

May 26, 2010 - 9:51AM

.An off-duty police officer was allegedly caught speeding more than 50km/h over the limit north of Melbourne yesterday afternoon.

Police say the Benalla man was riding a motorcycle on the Hume Freeway at Euroa when he was allegedly clocked travelling at 163km/h in a 110km/h zone.

Victoria's top traffic police officer Ken Lay said the 46-year-old, who is attached to a Melbourne police station, was detected on a mobile speed camera.

"He will face court in due course and face the consequences of these actions," he told Radio 3AW.

"Clearly that sort of behaviour is very difficult for me to condone. It undermines the road safety message and that's downright dangerous."

Deputy Commissioner Lay said the man's motorcycle was not seized at the time, and he was investigating why that had not occurred.

"Normally we would take it straight away. There are some reasons why we wouldn't. I just need to understand why that didn't occur," he said.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said an investigation had been launched into the incident.

"A Victoria Police spokeswoman said an investigation had been launched into the incident."

Do you think we will ever hear the outcome?

in the past maybe not, but seeing as the SPEED KILLS Propaganda spreading khunts seem to be at their most vocal lately - must be a huge hole somewhere that needs to be filled with easy revenue - I reckon this time they will make an example of this HOON

Double standards - aren't we all guilty of that ?

I used to tutor high school students and tell them not to procrastinate, then I return to uni and party when I have an assignment due in 2 days.

Not that I'm a sceptic, but I'd like to see a graph that showed the increase in speed camera revenue plotted against the (perceived) improvement in road safety.....I.e. the road toll. My bet is that there is little or no corelation between the increase in speed cameras and a corresponding reduction in road toll. But heck, governments love it and a bunch of brown cardigans believe it.

When are they going to do real things to improve road safety, like better road infrastructure, reduction of roadside collision objects (e.g. trees), more wire rope barriers in hilly terrain, earlier driver education in schools, real driving simulators for learners and higher risk groups, dare I say it but speed limits on good country roads to reduce fatigue by shortening trips etc.

You'll know they're serious when the money raised from speed cameras gets channelled into the above rather than into general revenue to address budget deficits.
