Danny, I feel for you, we are seeing this more and more often, I used to wear the cost of diagnosing and repairing some of these types of problems when tuning but not anymore.

I have had people attempt to save money and supply me their own parts, I have had spark supplied with broken electrodes, I have had injectors supplied with a faulty 1 in the mix, I have have had cars on the dyno and had to remove front bumpers to refit boost pipes that have blown off, I've pulled out walbro's because the owner thought that submersible fuel hose was too dear, the list could go on and on.

Although we all like to save a dollar, sometimes it is false economy, when a car comes in with brand A part fitted in 1 area and then Brand B part in another and then Brand C in another, who do you blame when the parts do not work together and do not make the power expected?

These cars are getting older and becoming cheaper, we are getting people buying them for very little and then because they read forums like this, they all want minimum 300 rwkw and they want it for $100 but they want it safe, I'm now telling people, if you want it safe, leave it standard. Sure we tune them to be as safe as we can, but we are pushing things harder and harder to make these power levels and people are tryng to use inferior products because they are cheaper, Just because car A made X amount of power, that does not mean car B will, we as tuners do not know what sort of service life these cars have had, how often has the oil been changed or more importantly, how long has it gone with out an oil change. This sort of stuff can have a big affect on how good the cranks and bearings are etc or even whether the piston rings are stuck in the ring grooves and creating poor cylinder sealing.

That first car you mentioned, I think I ended up with that and without going into details I believe what you are saying based on what I have seen from the owner. He now wants me to just flash a 12lb tune into it without fixing the 20 psi boost spike as it comes onto boost. He does not appear to understand, that although he is willing to take the risk as he wants to offload the car, a damaged motor from so much boost down low is not going to look good for our business as all the new owner will see is we tuned it.

I enjoy tuning, I really enjoy the look of excitement/panic from the owner as we roadtest the car, but it can be hard work sometimes when all does not go to plan.

I do all the rebuilds on my 4 stroke dirt bike myself. not a motorcycle mechanic by any stretch but I can read an instruction manual. I get asked to do a lot of peoples rebuilds but I am always 'busy' I just dont want the crap that comes with fixing other peoples bikes if they blow up. if my bike blows up poor me. I can simpathise with you headsex, after working on my own car so much in the last year I just would not want to touch anyone elses. I just tell em I dont know. my spare time is much better spent riding or driving my own toys rather than working on someone elses unmaintained heap of junk.

Mick,

I think we've agree'd that the cheaper the cars get, the more issues we're going to see, and of course, the mix match of parts, which always the tuner ends up getting blamed when your not making the claimed power others on the forum are.

Sometimes I wonder if people forgotten what the point of a cooler is worth with some of the crap they are buying from ebay.

turboute79,

Exactly.. Last September I bolted my GT42 kit to my car.. I haven't had anymore than 1 hour worth of tune tinkering to stop it stalling, yet alone tune it to make power... At the same time, I need to drop my built engine into it... But, When your busy doing everyone else's things.. When do you have time for your own.

The amount of happy customers you have, far outweigh the unhappy ones....

that's the thing that sucks, you try help someone out and sometimes you kick yourself for getting involved, even if you are getting paid. Atleast you stuck it out, sourced info and soughted out all the concerns with just tuning left to do. I dont think many tuners out there could do much with a car that's overboosting and a customer that wont do the neccessary things to rectify it. Better to let it go then own it if it breaks from a customer not listening to educated advice, sometimes you can just smell disaster around the corner. Maybe a second opinion from a "buisness" is whats needed but most of us know, you dont have to have your own buisness to know what your doing or what your talking about. Hope it all soughts itself out and everyone can be happy little vegemites again.

Oi!!! Are you talking about me Mick? :-(

I offered $200 for the tune and said I would be happy with 250rwkw!!!
