hi all

am back here after many years in the wilderness (driving a Mazda CX7 turbo).

Recently had an FG XR6 NA for a few days, and loved it!

So now want an FG turbo

Could you please let me know what to watch out for in buying a 2nd hand FG?

1. when did the FG XR6T come out?

2. have there been any production changes since it came out?

3. how good is the auto when used in 'manual' mode? Does it up and downchange quickly?

4. How do I tell for sure that a car has Premium Sound?

5. Any particularly expensive regular service ?

many thanks

1. May/June 2008.

2. Only recently, I think, but nothing you'd notice.

3. Don't know. Mine's manual, but everyone seem to think the ZF is the ducks guts.

4. It will have a grill on the lower section of the A pillar trim panels and a subwoofer on the parcel shelf, as well as a colour screen. (Providing it's a sedan you're talking about, if it's a ute then I think it's only the grills on the A pillar trim panel that give it away.)

5. Depends what you call expensive??

The ZF is one of the quickest changing auto boxes around without a dual clutch isn't it?

I had a manual BF F6 for 2 years with 360rwkw and I cannot wait to mod and tune my new ZF FG F6 up. The auto is much, much quicker in a straight line (no boost lost between gear changes) and a breeze in traffic

Can't go wrong with an FG I reckon. Just get one with some warranty incase it needs a few little bits fixed up, diff bushes etc. I love my auto and handles the extra power nicely.

many thanks guys!

question about the premium sound- does it also come with colour screen? Or can the colour screen be had without the premium sound?

Also, does the turbo version have the blue painted surrounds on the tacho and speedo?

cheers

If I was looking, the things I would be checking on an FG are

1. Scrubbed edges on the front tires. Wheel alighnment.

2. That the air box and exhaust are std and have never been removed.

3. ICC screen is clear, best to check it on a hot day for fade or blurr.

4. Glove box lid. They warp and don't sit flat in the upper left hand corner. I am on my second in less than twelve months and it is rooted now as well.

5. Rattles behind the trim above the glove box and roof lining sqeeks above drivers head.

6. Drivetrain noise. There can be ugly noises from the diff. Go around a few tight roundabouts. Clunking is fairly normal.

7. Oil leaks around the bell housing and sump gasket.

8. Paint quality. Look for the orange peel and difference in colour from the steel parts to the plastic.

9. Spare wheel. especially if you are thinking of putting on bigger brakes.

10. Have a look under the front spoiler. See if it has any paint left.

I would go the premium sound, ZF auto and all the air bags.

There is bugger all leather in the leather. And it gets pretty slippery and the seats don't hold you well enough for mine.

If its a auto give it a bootful off a stand still been a few fg's now receiving a massive thud in the rear end upon take off

mine is on of them really ruins the fun an no its not axle tramp its a noise similar to if you had your car on a massive hill an put it into reverse that clunk it would make.

Thanks ronski

from what I've been reading, this clunking in the diff is pretty widespread... is the only fix to replace the diff?

cheers
