The satellite-mounted cameras have advanced number plate reading technology which is coupled to a global positioning system (GPS) receiver.Developers PIPS Technology Limited, an American-owned company, say the system could cover a network of suburban streets as well as straight-line highways, and that its application in this instance was “probably geared up to zones in residential areas”.The British Home Office is currently testing the cameras at two sites, one in Southwark, London, and the other on the A374 express way between Antony and Torpoint in Cornwall. The system can be used in all weather conditions, day or night. The Home Office says it hopes the system will be used for main road enforcement for congestion reduction and speed enforcement, and to help eliminate “rat-runs” and cut speeding outside schools. It could also reduce the need for speed humps.Although the system brings in to question a number of privacy issues, a Home Office spokesperson said the development of surveillance-based systems is simply “a natural evolution of the technology that is out there”.Only a matter of time before the Australian government follows suit and starts raping us from outer space. "New speed cameras trap motorists from space," ran an April 20 headline in the Telegraph newspaper. In reality, the system isn't so extraterrestrial. It uses earth-bound cameras to photograph the license plates of cars and calculate their average speed over long distances. The system uses a global positioning system (GPS) to mark the time and location of the photographs. This is how it worksAt: New Speed Trap Gets Help From Above Edited 23/04/10 04:22 AM by f-wolf Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/67739-uk-plans-speed-camera-satellite/#findComment-1002780 Share on other sites

They should stop wasting money on trying to make more revenue and put the money into a department that needs it more. That many fixed speed cameras have popped up in my area it’s not funny, this really gives me the sh*ts if a uniformed police officer catches you speeding that’s fine instead of having hundreds of camera's do it for them. When will the government wake up and realise it’s not just speed that kills, look over seas isn't that an obvious sign. Accidents are going to happen nothing is going to stop that as long as there is cars on the road, no amount of red light/speed camera is going to stop an accident. It simply just takes a photo of the scene and creates some more revenue. If anything they are more dangerous being there as I find I keep looking at my speedo as I approach the intersection instead of what is happening on the road, and then watching the lights and trying to predict if they are going to change before I get to them. I bloody hope they don't go to this level, wonder if it would be a invasion of privacy. As the UK has pretty flexi privacy laws. In 2006 figures showed that excessive speed was reported as a factor in just 15% of all road accidents and in 26% of crashes where there were fatalities. So while hundreds of millions of pounds are spent on systems that can generate revenue, where is the investment in reducing the 85% of all road accidents where speed is not a factor? Perhaps the attraction of SpeedSpike is its reliance on many more ANPR cameras, which enables the police to store images of vehicles and drivers for up to two years and could be used in any future effort to conduct real time tracking of individual vehicles or people.More here:SpeedSpike GPS speed cameras won’t improve safety « Autonomous Mind Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/67739-uk-plans-speed-camera-satellite/#findComment-1002787 Share on other sites

Inspector Timothy Calman, a pilot for the NSW Police Force, said the device was similar to a speed camera. The only difference is, it is not on the ground. “It works over time and distance,” Insp Calman said. “The timer is activated by a Highway Patrol Officer in the aircraft when a vehicle crosses one white line and then deactivated when the vehicle crosses another white line positioned 500 metres away.“If you’re detected as speeding, the number plate of the vehicle is photographed and the owner of the vehicle is sent a fine in the mail. It is all done in the air and there is no involvement from police on the ground.”A number of factors determine how often the aircraft is in the air.“We cover the M4, F3 and the Hume Highway, but the specific sites are rotated depending on weather and other operational factors,” Insp Calman said. The Highway Patrol Officer can only focus the camera on one vehicle at a time.“We may see a vehicle travelling faster than another and decide to focus in on them for 500 metres and then move on to another the next 500 metres and so forth,” Insp Calman said.Insp Calman also explained that drivers may not even know they were being watched.“We fly at 500 to 1000 feet and some motorists may not even know we are in the air. It depends on where we position ourselves. It may be the case that motorists do not see us at all,” he said.Aerial speed enforcement has been introduced in particular areas along busy NSW roads.“The patrol areas were determined by information supplied from the RTA regarding designated black spots,” Insp Calman said.“This is about encouraging motorists to drive safely.”- Connie Agius Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/67739-uk-plans-speed-camera-satellite/#findComment-1002951 Share on other sites
