So ive been given an opportunity to get either of the 2 bonnets.

250$ for black xr8 fiberglass bonnet or 350$ for a carbon fiber xr8 bonnet. Still waiting for a reply to see if the carbon one is ADR approved though. As long as insurance will cover me its in the running.

Both in great 2nd hand condition.

Im aware carbon one is also a little lighter then the fiberglass one.

Which do we think? Im still a little skeptical on the carbon bonnets but they do grow on me after a while. Ill throw a poll in there

I'd be scared of both taking your head off in the case of an accident. I'd stick with steel IMO.

I have fiberglass bonnet, the first one started flaking and could see lines where must of been weakened over time, they gave me one free under warranty but if I was going to buy again id go steel!!

If the Carbon fibre one is adr approved then it's all sweet. I have a mate in brissy who makes all things carbon, they run sheets of kevlar between the carbon sheets to keep it all together in an accident, that and carbon kevlar sheets between carbon sheets too.

So why do the Japs allow CF bonnets and even the Europeans?

I'd like to see any stats saying this is a problem, at the moment it sounds like an urban myth.

Poor guy has had my car parked at his house for 3 weeks now lol. Im as keen as he is to get it out but as a perfectionist that he is, he wont let it go till its 100%. I gave him a lemon so he is "un-lemoning" it lol.

I've work with carbon fibre and fibre glass and I doubt you'd have an issue in a crash. They just snap and wont go through your windscreen. The only downside which is hard to prevent is if you get a big enough sharp hit from a stone (or whatever) it will cause it to delaminate one or two layers and is very hard to fix back to original condition.

There's no specific legislative instrument that says carbon fibre or fibreglass bonnets are illegal...just that all vehicles manufactured after 1995 must comply with ADR 69 - Full Frontal Impact Occupant Protection.

So unless the so called "ADR legal" suppliers of these bonnets have completed their own crash testing I can't see how anyone could claim them to be legal...and I can't imagine anyone having the resources to actually do that other than manufacturers.

Regardless of legality though I'm not willing to try it and find out if the decapitation theory is myth or fact! :roflmbo:
