Hey guys I have had my ba xr6t serviced recently and apparently the wastegate isn't operating correctly :S

when I get around full boost I can hear a sort of rattling/chattering around the turbo area, I think it's the bov that is opening and closing very slightly. Is this a big problem?? Does this just mean that there is slight boost leak?

Is it a wastegate issue or a BOV issue? There is no reason for a BOV to be flapping open as they are boost referenced.

Specs on the car are often helpful, is it stocko or tuned? Maybe the boost solenoid isn't working correctly?

Check if the flapper is catching on the dump pipe, sometimes it has been seen that the larger flapper gets caught as it opens fully

It's pretty close to stock. Just had a mild tune, new intercooler piping, cold air and bov. The rattling noise isn't a bearing going or sumthing similar??

What kind of issues would a wastegate not working properly cause?

problem with your actuator maybe???.....

if the wastegate is stuck open you will lose boost, closed will over boost ...

ive had my suspicions about the actuator cos the guy I bought my car off said he had it changed to a 12psi actuator...but then when I had it tuned they said it was still the stock one!! should I get this looked at asap? I dont want to do any damage

Can you take an audio sample of the noise? Might make it a bit easier to diagnose.

If the previous owner put a 12psi actuator in there, did it already have a tune to match? cos it would have been throwing codes and going into limp mode if it was still standard.

Have you checked all your piping is tight? and also might want to rip the filter on the turbo oil feed line out and replace it incase it's blocked very bad chattering noise if that's the case.

I wouldnt expect to hear a chattering or rattling noise from the wastegate flapper even if it were to touch the dump pipe as when fully open it should be pushing hard against it which would prevent the noise. Might be something else, is there any loose heat sheild or does it touch something that it could rattle against.

Actually now that u mention it, I tightened the turbo bolts a few weeks ago and I lost one of the screws for the turbo heatshield. That could be a possibility. I'll try and get a audio sample but might be a bit hard because the rattle sound might not come through loud enough over the sound of the turbo spool and exhaust. It only happens when the car is under load.

just took it down to the mechanics today and he said he couldnt find anything wrong with it, and the only two things he could see was either the rattling heatshield or...the bov fluttering slightly during boost!
