110 on a winding country road with probably 0 toddlers straying off their driveways is a little different to 60 in the suburbs with kids dogs soccer moms etc running in front of you so I dont quite get your point.

I agree with 40 in school zones and 50 in residential areas is tolerable... but I mean FFS double lane with huge median strip, fresh new road etc no houses and its a 70 zone?? I mean WTF !!! you could easily do 110 there piece of piss!! there are hundreds of roads like this all over WA and probably the rest of australia.

Cars are getting so safe yet limits keep getting brought down lower and lower so no wonder the accidents keep on happening - everyones bored sh*tless behind the wheel!!

My point is the 'feel' of a safe speed is not accurate. It feels slow doing 60 even though its not safe, why should you go 10-15 over a specialist's recommended safe speed? is your individual 'feel' of safety far superior to the process used to studied the deficiencies in the road, if so become a civil engineer and do a better job than them, explain how 'feel' is superior to the ruler and previous deaths.

Road works in Melbourne mean speed limits seem to be a joke sometimes (40 on a four lane highway with no workers/obstacles, but I still follow the rules, I don't want a ticket, and I don't want to kill a mum or dad worker if they fall in front of my car, not worth the 1 second saved on the trip home.

Actually as the limits come lower and lower and cars get safer and safer the road toll has dropped. But importantly less accidents occur because of the wrongly set up road rules, now when people die in car accidents its more likely that someone broke the law, than because they had bad luck.

I'm over it, ITS THE LAW! DON'T BREAK IT!

If people die, and you were speeding, its your fault.

The Camera's are an attempt at stopping you from being held responsible of manslaughter in court.

They make the government money, that is right, its the governement they spend the money on us anyway, its no different than paying taxes or voting in a Left wing government, its a larger proportion of GDP that goes throught the government. that is all

stirthepot.gif My car spends more time on cruise control than with my foot on the loud pedal. It's the only way I can stay at or just under the speed limit.

Is that safe?

:omg:

Set the cruise control and fall asleep...safest option there is.

My point is the 'feel' of a safe speed is not accurate.

Aren't speed limits supposed to be set using the 85th percentile rule?

Dash, you're forgetting how dangerous looking at the speed every 5 seconds is, this is especially true during double demerits. Speed cameras may reduce speed related deaths, but it'll do the opposite for deaths due to inattention and fatigue.

Driving at a comfortable speed (usually 15 km/h over) with both eyes on the road is always safer than glancing at the speedo every 5 seconds. With eyes on the road, you're more attentive and see more detail. The faster reaction time will more than compensate for the extra braking distance.

well after 15 years of driving over the limit in most cases doing at least 350kms per week with ZERO NONE ZILCH NOT 1 single crash I think its pretty farken safe if you ask me !!! sure ive had close calls, 90% of them are fugwits changing lanes into my lane without looking and 10% are people pulling out in front of me but ive still managed to stop with plenty of room.

keep in mind im not talking excessive speed for the conditions which is the killer when it comes to fatalities, but just 5-10-15-20kph over the limit depending on the weather, road layout, traffic and my state of mind. I would happily do more if the conditions are right but my license would suffer when it gets fisticated by the draconian road rules regarding speeding.

I would class myself as an average driver as well so its not like I think im Lewis Hamilton or think im invincible or my car is the safest on the road.

I just know that it is a fact that speed limits are dumbed down by a good 20-25% than what they could realistically and safely be and it frustrates me to no end.

A "specialist's recommended safe speed" is really just a guy paid by the govt to maximise frustration out of the road users by setting a limit too low for a given stretch of blacktop. More frustration = more chance of sinking the boot in = more revenue.

I know it sounds like conspiracy theories but otherwise why the constant lowering of limits all around the country as people adjust to the new limits and quantity of fines for that stretch of road drop?

but you're right, 'they' determine the number to paint on the sign so if you exceed it you have broken the law and if you crash 'they' can then blame the fact your speedo number was higher than the painted sign number therefore you are wholly at fault due to speeding. Then this helps argue their cause that they need more cameras to stop people speeding which has the lovely side effect of bringing in more revenue.

So if someone doesn't crash over 273,000km, it means there was no risk in what they've done.

How many times can someone eat a wild mushroom before it becomes dangerous?

I'm glad your not talking excessive speed for the conditions, because as it has been shown 100 in a 100 zone is excessive speed, when hitting a tree, another car, a pole or a roo.

Who told you or how did you work out that speed limits are dumbed down 20%? Not according to my figures they ain't. They were initially set at the speed that the majority of drivers drove at, and that is where most of them still remain.

Except for 50k and 40k zones where the deaths of pedestrians and children left no option but to consider going against the majority noise and slow everyone down to a speed where some people can stop in time.

It really comes down to a compromise between two things;

a few seconds extra spent on the road a day

vs

the number of deaths sacrificed for those few seconds.

Its not going to prevent all deaths and major trauma on the road, but it will prevent some, without a doubt. Why would the government want to raise revenue anyway? that means they have to spend it. They cant just put it in their pockets.

I'm talking about 10km over the speed limit.....Sydneys busiest camera's are in 40km school zone in sydney....1.5 meter fences on the footpath, on both sides..an over pass over the road.....so whats the need for cameras...And a high school....So its not young kids..they should know better...But we the motorist have to pay...for doing 4km over....They are bending us over and you tools reckon...don't speed....simple...not that simple...driving home from work if the traffic is flowing at 70km in a 60 zone....tell me you blokes sit on 60km...If I'm behind a police officer and he sits on 70....so do I....Must be a safe speed if they sit on it...This is the start of worse things to come.......They will fark us one by one....Sit back watch and wait.....

Look at it this way;

"I take heroin, and enjoy it, everyone around me does it, I've been doing it for years and I'm not dead. Isn't it better that I take it rather than move on to something more serious? besides its not the people that enjoy heroin that OD its the people that are depressed and take heaps.

I'm not annoyed that its against the law, just that the cops only come past my joint and not the guy next door, he is the one that sells it.. or maybe the bloke down the street that is addicted"

blah blah blah.. Don't do it, its stupid.
