Ok so for a guy like me 85kg, 5'11, moderate experience, what kind of bike should I be looking at??

200, 250, 300 400?? KTM, Honda, Yamaha??

I know when I was riding 10 years ago Yamanah produced awesome bikes but I dont know a great deal these days. Going shopping Saturday starting at Peter Stevens who do the KTMs..

Are there things I should be looking for or does it just come down to preference??

Thanks again guys

dude get a drz400 - they are just as powerful as any 450 without the crazy maintenance schedule of a motox bike - also a fair bit cheaper - should be able to pick one up around 8000 - 9000 :bangcomputer:

I would also include life and accident insurance and make sure you have top hospital cover......you will need it.

One of my ExStaff was a very experienced rider and he would average one decent crash a year. Smashed knee, buggered shoulder, broken fingers, the list went on and on.

I would suggest a PeeWee 50cc and only ride on sand

Yeah, go the DR400 Or KLX 400, both are plenty fast enough for poking around the trails & are pretty low maintence compared to an MXer.

As for crashing, sure it will happen, the injuries just depend on how lucky you are. I've been riding on dirt for about 15 years & have had some pretty spectactular high speed crashes but I've never broken a bone, yet some mates of mine have had pathetic low speed crashes & have ended up with busted shoulders, collar bones etc,

Luck of the draw I guess :bangcomputer:

Still 2 stroke.

Really high concentration level.

Just a tiny bit cheaper than bikes.

And you get a real buzz cos it's a huge learning experience.

If you budget in good riding gear you will be fine. You will cop bumps, limps and bruises. But no worse than playing footy.

Ive broken lots, but you get use to it. It all depends on how fast you want to go, and how fast your fitness and ability will let you.

Dianeze make a great all in one body armor for your upper half, knee braces and good boots for your lower. Don't skim on your helmet either. The foam craps out early in the cheap ones.

If you are worried about getting too hurt, then have a look at mountain biking. A great way to keep in shape with fairly decent thrills. And more places to ride that are usually more convenient.

Have you thought about getting a track bike and doing ride days? You can pick up couple of year old 2nd hand track bike for the cost of a decent dirt bike and they are loads of fun, you don't need to get a bike lic you can get a MA lic for track days and racing if you get right into it.

He is a pic from last weekend at Wakefield Park A couple of mates had there first ever race and came 1st and 3rd in class.
