With speed cameras etc these days, I would like to have a more accurate and more visual speed reading than we get from our present speedo.

I know that the NSW Late model camira SS police chasers have a way of making their cars give a digital reading from the standard instruments.

Is there any way that the XR6 can give a digital speed reading from the Ford XR6 computer.

If this is not possible could you get an aftermarket digital speedo instrument fitted to the XR6.

If so does anybody know who could do it in Sydney.

It can be done, but you will loose fuel read outs, dte, etc..

It's called Police mode. There was a thread on this ages ago, or get your dealer to do it for you.

I always thought Police mode was the thing you set that beaps when you hit whatever speed you set. Mines set at 120km/h btw (saved my brother from one of those mobile speed camera's. I let him drive my T with me as a passenger. He gunned it off the lights, then when it hit the beap he quickly slowed down, thinking something went wrong, but luckily he then saw one of those mobile camera's ahead and had slowed down in plenty of time). But in terms of speedo, the needle on the speedo seems to be a few km's higher than the actual speed. The average speed setting on the trip computer seems to be accurate to actual speed (needle shows 115km/h average speed shows 111km/h). I even tested it driving past some road works that had one of those big "your current speed" things. It read 69km/h and the needle on the speedo showed about 72km/h.

Police mode works well. I have it and its 100% spot on

Could you please describe what Police Mode does, I take it from the above comments that it replaces the trip computer display with a more accurate current speed readout, anything else ?

The Commodores have had the digital readout for a while. It is surprisingly accurate.

The AU didn't have it, we relied upon the checked speedometer with the 2km increments.

The old Police speedometers are no longer issued for NSW. We now have a seperate digital speedo which is calibrated by way of a chassis dynomameter.

I haven't had the luxury or playing around with the digital display of a BA yet due to only have evaluating them for handling, stopping and acceleration. We only have Commodores in our office (Boo hoo!)

Found this post on FordForum.com.

Just a note on the "Legal" ramifications of enabling the digital speedo readout on the odometer that seems to be a hot topic with dealerships that are unwilling to do so and give the customers some cock and bull story as to why they supposedly cant or wont. The digital speedo enabling, known as "Police Mode",is available on the entire BA range of vehicles. It is one of the many features that, if the owner of a BA would like enabled, IS entitled too. It is only called Police Mode because it is one of the features that the police wanted to be incorporated in the manufacturing of the vehicle that could be reconfigured for the vehicle to be used as a police vehicle rather than the additional cost of fitting recalibrated instruments(smaller increments on speedo, etc). All the dealer has to say is that even with the digital speedo enabled you must realize that you dont automatically have a dead acurate speedo. When this feature is enabled on police vehicles, they are then checked, recalibrated(error offset adjusted using WDS) and certified to be acurate. If you have ever seen inside a police vehicle with this feature you would see a little decal affixed to the windscreen saying speedo certified. They are also fitted with a larger decal stating "USE DIGITAL SPEEDO FOR SPEED RELATED OFFENCES". In a nut shell, if you have this feature enabled, you ARE allowed to have it,just remember that unless you have had it checked and the error offset reconfigured then it will still read about 2-4%more than it should.(3% being the industry standard)

Entering the Police Instruments Calibration Mode - (Police AU Series II - AUIII and BA Models)

1) With the ignition key in the Off position, press and hold the Odometer reset knob

2) Turn the Ignition Switch On, and continue to hold the Reset shaft in for 5 seconds, until the cluster enters calibration mode, (Typically 5 seconds)

2) The Odometer will then display "SPEEDO #.#" - where #.# is the Speedo calibration Percentage, and is set to "0.0" Percent from the factory.

3) To increase the Percentage adjustment, Press the Odometer reset shaft for a short period of time (0.2 to 0.7 seconds). This will increase the adjustment by 0.5%

4) To decrease the Percentage adjustment, Press the Odometer reset shaft for a long period of time (0.8 to 4.9 seconds). This will decrease the adjustment by 0.5%

5) To exit the speedo calibration mode, press and hold the Odometer Reset shaft for a period longer than 5 seconds.
