ab_futura Member 21 Member For: 17y 6m 30d Gender: Male Posted 14/03/10 12:30 PM Share Posted 14/03/10 12:30 PM I was talking to an engine builder for advice on oil pump gears and harmonic balancers and he explained to me the reason the oil pump gears fail is because of bad harmonics from the engine weakening the gears in the pump. He said to me the oil pump itself is fine as long as I install a top quality harmonic balancer. This make's sense but my concern is that my engine is out of a wreck that took a massive hit into a poll. Should I be worried about the impact weakening the oil pump gears? Should I buy a new oil pump to be on the safe side? Can anybody tell me roughly what a standard oil pump would cost compared to one with billet gears? It's very easy to say just replace it to be safe, but I don't want to waste my money if there is no need to. The motor has only done 27000kms is currently on on engine stand. In your position, I would look at how hard you intend to beat up on the engine, if its lots then billet gears are good insurance. Many big HP T's and 6's still run the factory gears.. In your position, especially if you are considering a new oil pump anyway, I would find the bucks for the quality stuff, you will never have to worry about them failing from then on. And a brand new Genuine pump.. Just my humble opinion dude,Cheers,Mal K

I keep seeing in posts that the pump is modified.. What is done exactly and how much does the pump and mods cost?

That is the reason why atomic modiy their pumps as such Edited 15/03/10 09:56 AM by RUS531

It would be handy to know so that I can budget accordingly... Does anyone have a contact number for Atomic?

They also come with a billet backing plate for thrust wear resistance. Retail prices are on the Atomic website.Atomic Performance Parts - Performance through innovation -
