Mine has always done this also but being up north I pretty much have it running flat out most of the time!

How hard are they to remove or is it as simple as unscrewing and dropping the case from behind the glove box?

Might need a bit of Dremel action...

Is it bearing noise you're talking about or a scraping noise cos it's hitting/rubbing?

If it's internal bearing noise a high temp oil will fix it aka engine oil. Silicon oil burns off pretty quick. I've fixed 2 heater fans this way.

Yea its a ticking from the motor. I pulled mine out at work today and had a listen and with the fan unable to touch anything the ticking is still there. I think ill just turn the stereo up.

They are pretty easy to get out. Just drop the glove box and pull it off its hinges (just push it upwards and they sort of unclip). Then crawl under with a torch and you'll see 3 screws securing the plastic part that holds the fan in. Undo these and unclip the power supply and it should just drop out with a bit of fiddling. Then you see 2 smaller screws holding the electric motor into the plastic housing.

I pulled mine out again and this time I stretched the springs behind the brushes out and put it back in. I also spray it with some electrical cleaner I found in the garage. Mine clicking appears to come from the brushes and the communtator. I know this because if I oil, grease or spray the brushes and comm the noise goes away for about 1 week. My theory behind stretching the springs behind the brushes is the brushes where down over time and become smaller and therefore don't have as much tension when contacting with the comm. By stretching the springs I might put enough pressure back on the brushes when contacting the comm and hopefully my noise will stay away. Only time will tell...

I did notice the comm was uneven and had alot grooves in it so maybe if you could smooth them out a bit the noise would go away...

just let you know I think the stretched out brushes springs did the trick and has fixed the ticking noise. I haven't heard anything out of it for a few weeks now. I'm guessing it will come back over time as the brushes get smaller and smaller but I suppose I could just put a small spacer behind the springs when it gets to that stage.
