You don't want expanding petrol to deform the tank and leave it susceptible to leaking. That's why you never fill the tank to the brim.It's a bit like people lowering cars till they scrape the road just for an extra 0.01 G of grip. Pretty stupid. I started listening to the filling and when you start to hear it going up the neck, I stop now. Needle is still over the full line, but now I don't get the fuel smell .
