Being one who has no idea about MX5's. Is there any big difference in models? As in one year had a better/stiffer chassis.

I think the NB was the the first 1.8 which I have been told is a better starting point.

Mate these things are as cheap as chips. And a quick google has shown me some go to fairly big efforts on them. Ah boy's and their toys. lol

My budget for Super sport is about 40 thou buy in 2nd hand, and around ten to fifteen a year to compete if I can keep it in one piece.

Personally I would prefer TT's and the occasional sprint to banging wheel nuts in a semi open wheeler.

So yeh I have seen these things getting around the traps and always though mmm That might be fun and suitable to my pitiful budget.

Plus the fact as you said that you can get a blue label on it ( here in QLD ) and take it for a spin over the hills on a nice day just adds to the appeal.

Gday Brett, yes there are significant differences between models. mx5cartalk.com is a big Aussie based forum with heaps of info. Basically, the earliest cars (NA6) are the lightest and have a 1.6, the NA8 from end 93-97 is a 1.8 with bigger brakes, stiffer chassis etc than the NA6. This is what my car is. Then there are 3 versions of the NB. NB's now make very good buying, as they are a better starting point for performance work and newer, and now getting cheaper than good NA8s which retain really good resale due to limited numbers sold and popularity of the original MX-5 shape + 1.8 engine.

As you might know there is a huge MX-5 Motorsport scene, with very active National Race programs for wheel to wheel racing of purpose built track cars, and also the state based MX-5 clubs are very active with regular super sprints, hill climbs, motorkhanas and the like with classes for stock, modified nat. asp, turbo etc. They are a fantastic car for grass roots motorsport as they are light weight, rear wheel drive, have “A” Arm suspension all round and are cheap to run, and very fun to drive. ..and you can modify them to pretty much any level. Your idea about taking the car for a drive over the hills for a blat is why I will keep this road rego’d….its my hobby car for racing, tweaking, driving and generally having fun with. You can pm me for any info you want and I’ll try to push you in the right direction.

Thanks Erko

Really does sound good. I have been umming and arrghing for a year now since deciding I cant race bikes anymore. I have even tried not too do it at all. But it really just gets to tempting to be an idiot on the road if you don't have some sort of outlet. Once it's in the system..

I have had the fortune to drive a few differnent classes and it always comes back to cash. Being seperated with two kids in private school hurts. that's not a complaint.

So yes all the best to you and the missus and your kewl new toy. And thanks again.

Geez that's got some goodies on it mate, nice pick up.

A mate of mine bought one a few years ago with an AVO turbo kit, had a dodgy 5th injector set-up so it was faily old school lol

I've always thought of getting one as a track car, but alas I'm too big to fit in one lol

@ RAPID The dodgy 5th injector eh, now that's old school :brightidea: Thanks Chris, yeah its pretty well sorted. Good thing I lost about 20kgs so now I can fit in it no worries. Im getting some low mount rails and race seats to give me some extra helmet clearance too, but as is its still ok. Im 181cm.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I'm guessing this was a better option than spending a packet on the F6 to knock off a second here or there? And not as much of a disaster if you damage anything too?

I'd love to do something like this.
