I have a rattle under my car somewhere that I can not find. It appears to be worse when it is hot, but that could just be me :w00t2:

It sounds like a loose bracket that is attached to the body somewhere and rattles only when going over bumps in the road (sharp bumps). I thought it was the exhaust hitting the body somewhere, but if move it around via tail pipes I can not hear it hit anywhere. Also the heat shields around cat section have been removed.

Anyone else had a similar issues with their BA or BF ute? This is defiantly not that tray line, but more a metal on metal clunk and it can be pretty loud at times.

Cheers.

Check the presence and tightness of all of the brakets that mount the style side box. Also check the torque on the U-bolts.

Failing that it could be the style side box floor panels "oil-canning" (rolf harris style) against the support rails underneath.

bunna, I was under the impression that the rear tray (style side box) sits directly on the chaises rails?

I am going to try and get it up on the hoist this week and have another good look. The tray is going to come off soon to do fuel pump and also a bunch of rear suspension work. Will need to do something to address the floor panels also.

U bolts I checked and tightened not long ago. I have fixed a few noises so far but this rattle is driving me nuts :buttonit:

Cheers

Mines gettin a decent rattle these days.. But I think its my exhaust heat shields, sounds like crap and you can really hear it outside the car.. Was in a car park with the worlds biggest speed humps and I scraped every single one, think that's the cause..

Just so we're clear - I term a tray something like an alloy box, whereas a style side box is the body coloured full panelled assembly with the plastic line tray.

Assuming you have a SSB its mounted to both the back of the cabin and to the chassis rails.

However, your rattle may well be the box floor panels oil canning. Try to figure out what sort of road surfaces, speeds, temperatures, and other inputs result in the noise, and whether you can replicate them consistently. Then try and turn the noise off temporarily over the same conditions. For the oil canning, I'd say throw something rather heavy in the back and drive around as a start, with some more complicated disassembly as a further step.
