I am 48 this year. And I teach advanced riding and driving. Or did till a few weeks ago. ( still bored out of my brain) I think I have paid my penance. Ten years of it is enough. A plane and a train are the only two things I am not licensed to drive. I love my driving and I am very passionate about it. I would be happy on a ride on mower if that's all their was.

One thing teaching has taught me is that 90% of the population cannot drive in a panic situation. They go stiff and freeze. They jump on the brakes or back off to violently. But worst of all they never ever look for a way to drive out of the situation.

Their driving even in a normal situation is very poor. And it mainly comes down to a few things.

Concentration is one of the biggest. We call it conscious incompetence. And yes this is where the fossils get into most trouble. They have been driving for thirty, forty or more years. And they don't think about what they are doing.

And the young with their doof doof, their texting and bloody crystals hanging off the mirror. FREAKS. Oh and BTW you can be booked for that, shoite hanging off your mirror. Even on a hands free unit talking while driving is equivalent to having a BAC of .08 Sorry but this was proved with professional drivers. And texting ha ha just tie a rope around your neck now.

Even the best of you always turn in to early. Enter too fast and the laws of physics will always send you into the oncoming lane. This is the major cause of problems in the young!

Most of you follow the line of the bonnet instead of looking where you want to go and letting the bonnet come to you. And no one looks far enough ahead. DO NOT wait for the car in front of you to brake. You should already have yours covered before the numb nuts in front of you has even thought he needs to brake.

Concentration, empathy and patience. That is what makes a good, safe driver.

Anyone can go fast. Very few can bring it back from the dead. End of lesson grasshopppers

We also can't forget the morons who drive 10-20 ks below the speed limit, brake in the slightest corner and continue to drive slowley when there are a heap of cars stuck behind without pulling over

I think all drivers should be tested for knowladge every 10 years and driving test every 10 years. This would result in every driver doing some sort of refresher every 5 years. There is no single demographic that is a better driver than the other.

Being taught how to do the most basic things like:

Seating position

Mirror adjustment

where to look when driving

what ABS feels like when active

How to drive in a F..king roundabout

What the lever on the steering wheel tells other drivers

how to use the throttle, gears and brakes

how to be a considerate driver by KEEPING LEFT, Indicating and thanking people if they giveway

And about 1000 other things people need to know when driving to avoid road rage, crashes and damage to your car.

Testing Once you Reach 50/60/70etc!

You have got to be kidding! I have seen 20 year olds who have their license who are just as bad... so your soloution to all people over 50 is to retest them! give me a break, Why discriminate against the elderly (not that 50 is old) if you are suggesting that these tests should come in to play then EVERYONE should be tested every x years. like there isnt a problem with road rage in this country... what about the elderly people that are driving through traffic leaving 3 second gaps not complaining when hoons are darting in and out of traffic. what about people driving with gloves, muslims driving with berkers and having no periferals (dont know how to spell) People with screaming kids, people on phones, cars that are not up to saftey standards, visitors from overseas driving on their o/s license.

What about a bit of courtosey on the road! it would go along way and reduce the accident rate

If these elderly drivers are so bad why dont the police POLICE it and bring in a point system eg, if anyone looks like they are having trouble and would no longer be able to drive at an Australian standard apply points to their license and when they hit x points they have to do the test to prove they can drive, but not just because they hit 50

Not long ago on one of our expressways an elderly man merged into a 90km/hr zone doing 20km/hr and cut straight infront of a semi... ofcourse the semi got blamed! and the media played it up as this poor old grandpa blah blah.. when there is an accident involving two cars and one is a p plater.. and one is a elderly person... the kid seems to cop the blame (media wise) even though its not always the case...

I hear ya.

Nothing against competent older drivers, but several times, I've been held up in one lane traffic only to later realise there was an old man at the front driving at half the speed limit. Tickets should be issued for people who drive slow with no proper reason.

Oh dear. FAIL FAIL FAIL

We can fail you on attitude now as well ( thank god ) and with these replies ha ha.

I would love bi annual testing, no not bi anal. lol I love watching people cry when you fail them.

You can be booked for doing 20kmp/h under the speed limit on motorways or highways.

You can be booked for not merging safely. Or not letting someone merge safely.

You can be booked for not staying in the left hand lane unless overtaking in most states.

And now in Queensland you can dob them in. Yep there is a push coming and not from the Police to dob in a dickhead. It will never work though.

You can be booked for almost everything these days. The national rule book TORUM is well over 700mb with just text. And it's growing every year.

First you hate the wallies for doing booking everyone, then you hate them for not. No wonder you have to be a dickhead to be one.

Seems most here are confused with being a good driver on the road and being a good race driver.

Being a good driver on the road is having patience and empathy.

Being a good driver on the track is about practice.

growing up in the centre of australia's biggest city I can tell you most of the bad driving is done by either young ppl driving way past there skill level as I did when I was younger

or my most hated driver asians young or old those *beep* cant drive they should be made to ride a push bike for a year that way only the ones with some driving skills will be on the road stirthepot.gif

old ppl although useless just travel to slow and dont do any real harm in most cases besides making everbody else mad roflmbo.gif

cheers trev
