An this is still with mineral oil in it - should quieten down a little more with synthetic.

That's what I thought as well, but when I put my trusted Castrol EDGE 10w60 back in the engine, the rattle got worse :slap:

Had to settle for Magantec in the end, as it is thinner, and sticks more to internal surfaces of the engine.

My theory is lack of lubrication in the bottom of the cylinders and piston skirts, as the Atomic rods have deleted the cooling / lubrication squirter hole at the base of the rods, and the only reason I could see why the engine got noisier with a good viscous synthetic oil, was that less oil escapes from the main and conrod bearing journals, and thus less oil makes its way to the bottom of the cylinders.

Anyway that's my theory, and for the same reason, I drilled the squirter holes in my new engine setup.

cp pistons are working on new piston disign to get rid of the rattle, I don,t care about the rattle as long as it holds together

And I have no doubt that it will :slap:

I am not questioning the durability or strength of any of the products discussed, they are no doubt designed for racing applications, and will provide a near bullet proof engine.

All I am saying (and I wish that I had known before venturing out into my engine mods.) is that these engines may be too noisy for some, and anyoine thinking about doing this, should make an informed decision before jumping in :spoton:

I agree with what you are saying, the only reason I don,t care is it is in my work ute and there is always something banging around the back and my ute is like the old *beep* everybody uses it, if it was my good car it would be different

Most dont even need forged pistons.

Forged pistons were deemed necessary 10-15 years ago because

1. cast pistons were generally crap at the time

2. no one understood much about tuning and tuning with carburetted turbos was difficult and damaging cast pistons/rods with and without detonation so forged was the only option.

ACL have been making very strong performance cast pistons in the last 10 years to the point many will take 500-600hp ATWs very well. In actual fact their race series pistons are brilliant where I have been putting thru 500 to 600 RWHP thru these pistons for years and never breaking one. The BA turbo piston is just as strong.

You will break the most toughened up BTR 4sp around before you break a stock BA Piston. Bad tuning will break a forged piston pretty much nearly just as easily as a high performance cast.

nika, are these atomic engines balanced and blueprinted? if yes they shouldnt rattle.rattle usually means that the clearances are not right.correct me if im wrong.

Without making myself a spokesperson for Atomic, I believe that they are.

The issue is the forged pistons which must run greater clearances, and thus can be rattely especially when cold. This get better when the engine warm up, but mine continued to have piston slap between 1000 and 1800 rpm, and I know for a fact that Simon who built my engine took the greatest care to make sure we stayed on the lower side of the allowable clearance for the pistons.

I built my new engine using a brand new Ford bottom end, and then strengthened it by using Atomic rods, and Kostecki billet oil pump gears, but maintaining the new stock pistons, and it is a sweet engine :spoton:

It will not be as tolerable of a bad tune as the previous one was, but it satisfies my mechanical ear so much better, so I can live with the risk.

the rattle from the piston is due to the pistons having a less/more(cant remember which) silicone content in them, therefore they expand alot more than cast with heating up and cooling down hence the knock louder when cold :spoton:

Higher silicone content the quieter.

I have Forgies in my rex rattles like a bitch and we ran minimum clearances. It's bitch now that I am trying to sell the car.

FORD DEALER so called head mechanic told me my engine was fuc ked and need a rebuild, what a twit.. So they wouldn't trade in the car...

Wish I had used stocko pistons now :spoton:

then why is it then, that nizpros bottom end dont rattle? is it that "you get what you pay for?" "you pay peanuts, you get monkeys?"
