Ninka Donating Members 1,850 Member For: 21y 11m 4d Gender: Male Location: Perth, WA Posted 07/10/06 11:02 AM Share Posted 07/10/06 11:02 AM An this is still with mineral oil in it - should quieten down a little more with synthetic.←That's what I thought as well, but when I put my trusted Castrol EDGE 10w60 back in the engine, the rattle got worse Had to settle for Magantec in the end, as it is thinner, and sticks more to internal surfaces of the engine.My theory is lack of lubrication in the bottom of the cylinders and piston skirts, as the Atomic rods have deleted the cooling / lubrication squirter hole at the base of the rods, and the only reason I could see why the engine got noisier with a good viscous synthetic oil, was that less oil escapes from the main and conrod bearing journals, and thus less oil makes its way to the bottom of the cylinders.Anyway that's my theory, and for the same reason, I drilled the squirter holes in my new engine setup. Forged pistons were deemed necessary 10-15 years ago because1. cast pistons were generally crap at the time2. no one understood much about tuning and tuning with carburetted turbos was difficult and damaging cast pistons/rods with and without detonation so forged was the only option.ACL have been making very strong performance cast pistons in the last 10 years to the point many will take 500-600hp ATWs very well. In actual fact their race series pistons are brilliant where I have been putting thru 500 to 600 RWHP thru these pistons for years and never breaking one. The BA turbo piston is just as strong.You will break the most toughened up BTR 4sp around before you break a stock BA Piston. This get better when the engine warm up, but mine continued to have piston slap between 1000 and 1800 rpm, and I know for a fact that Simon who built my engine took the greatest care to make sure we stayed on the lower side of the allowable clearance for the pistons.I built my new engine using a brand new Ford bottom end, and then strengthened it by using Atomic rods, and Kostecki billet oil pump gears, but maintaining the new stock pistons, and it is a sweet engine It will not be as tolerable of a bad tune as the previous one was, but it satisfies my mechanical ear so much better, so I can live with the risk. It's bitch now that I am trying to sell the car.FORD DEALER so called head mechanic told me my engine was fuc ked and need a rebuild, what a twit..
