Smoke them tyres Member 557 Member For: 17y 1m 27d Gender: Male Location: Brisbane Posted 01/03/10 01:19 PM Share Posted 01/03/10 01:19 PM Those larger diameter tyres just have too little sidewall to be able to absorb a monster hole like that. Once the steel in the bead is taken into consideration, there is very little sidewall there. They are effectively part of the spring rate of the car. 17/18's are much more forgiving and lose little in overall handling IMO. A reasonable trade-off.Some rims can actually have the beads re-rolled. Seen it done and the results come out pretty good after a polish or two. To say that I have been loosing sleep over it is an understatement. The rain doesn't make things better as you guys have said. The water seeps in the cracks, and as the traffic drives over it, it 'pumps out' the soil material (road base) below the asphalt or bitumen seal. With no support, the road collapses into a 'pothole'. That's the theory of it anyway...What they use to patch holes is 'cold mix' asphalt. This will not stay around for long if they don't first prime the pocket with some cutback bitumen so the stuff sticks in there. It's like filling a tooth- You will notice that the dentist will prime the hole before he fills it with amalgum or that other white crap that they use. Secondly, they have to compact it down properly, so when a fully loaded mudcarter drives his truck over it, it doesn't create another depression. Anyway, what I wanted to ask does anyone in brisbane have any cheap 17's or stockies they can sell me? I need to put the 20s on Ebay as soon as they are replaced....cheers, Jeremy

White Knight Donating Members 73 Member For: 15y 3m 28d Gender: Male Location: Sydney Posted 04/03/10 09:28 AM Share Posted 04/03/10 09:28 AM Really makes me think long and hard about a set of 19's or 20's. I think they'd have to be on like a show-set / weekend use only.Get a set of 15 inch drag rims for everyday use .... too bad the brakes won't allow for anything under 17 inch on the BF Half the repair jobs on the road in Sydney here are a f*ing joke. Anyone notice the natural "hump" in Cowpasture Rd near the Sydney Water depot @ Cecil Hills, or the natural hump Eastbound on the M4 just near the Eastern Creek service centres (that crosses all three lanes)? Both have been "repaired" and are now even worse than the original problem. At least the original humps were a SMOOTH transition up and down ... I cannot honestly say I have seen one single good repair job anywhere, ever.Key thing mate, document everything date/time, their responses, etc. That way your facts are consistent and you've got some recourse. Looks like you've already started ...

I think putting 20s on my car when it's a daily driver is one of the WORST decisions I have ever made. Don't even think about it! I think I'm going to get some steel rims and go the 'taxi' look. The 20s will be sold for a cheap price after 2 get replaced under insurance. Yeh, I sent them a long winded sob story email and cc'd in my insurance company. Not much more I can do really. I'm driving a hire car around now and after all that rain I'm glad I am. The roads have really taken a pounding.... Toyota corolla yeah!

Tried my best to miss it and now have a blown front left tyre with bent rim and rear left bent rim. Have any of you had much luck getting vicroads/coucil to re-imberse? Have witnesses.
