I've read on the forum at the above link that some ex-police officers have said (and I don't know if they really are ex-police officers) that they can allegedly detect radar detectors before a user knows they've been pinged.  And by the time a user knows they are being pinged, they allege, it's too late anyway.  But I don't know for real, because I don't have one and I've never used one.

I can vouch for this, I've seen cops rip the interior out of a car because they detected a radar-dectector (with a radar detector detector, no less!). They found it too.

surely they cant tear your car apart?? they would need to obtain a warrant or such for this? one would think so anyway :spoton:

Detector Detectors DO EXIST, but there are less than 6 working units in NSW and they do false alarm a lot. If you use a RD you know how often they false, the RDD are no different.

RD's are undetectable by any RDD's if they are switched off, and some are undetectable by the Stalcar2 and 3 units. The Bel STI is one of the best portable units, but a consealed unit is a better option in states that RD's are illegal.

If you are caught with one, the police CANNOT pull your car apart and also cannot detain you for a unacceptable length of time, if they cannot see it, they must let you go.

that's exactly what I would have thought!

I'm keen to get one, but there's so many options!

what about this one?: http://www.beatthespeedtrap.co.nz/australia.html

Guys, be VERY careful about any website offering RD's for sale online.

http://www.radarbusters.com/ would be the only place I would buy online.

Do not believe about the "Australian Conditions" and that USA detectors will not work they are full of BS.

A Bel STI or Valentine V1 would be the 2 best portable detectors on the market, but there are Euro and USA ones. you should be getting the USA ones, as they use the same gear.

If one reads enough reviews on the Bel STI and the Passport X50, one would find that they're very close with the X50 pulling slightly ahead in the highway readings.

I ended up with the X50 (Getting one for $400 was better than $600+ too) because I've owned them dating back before they were called Passport (Cincinnati Microwave, back in the Escort days). To be fair with my judgement, I've also owned a few Bels as well.
