You could argue till cops fly but all in all the above are almost identical in performance apart from the 980 which is an older model.

The 995 and 65 can be used in conjunction with the 905 Bel laser Jammer whereas the older 980 Bel will not work with the 905.

The Escort Passport 8500 X50 is a good unit but as far as being better than the bell is arguable.

All have laser detection but that is useless unless its jamms laser which none of them do!!

When the laser detector goes off! If it goes off, it just means Pull over and take a ticket!

So if you think by buying one so you can get past the laser …Think again……

I’ve heard of grown men smash them on the side of the road after getting a ticket thinking it’s the units fault they got busted, more a case of the unit behind the wheel doesn’t know what a radar detector is and what it will and will not help him avoid.

Do your homework before you buy and USE! or you will be burning money faster than you can make it while your car sits in the garage waiting for you to get a licence back.

I can buy them in Sydney .But they are the stealth ones hiiden behind the front bumper . Laser detector is also useless unless it has a laser jammer with it .

Bell won't ship to Aus UNLESS your a recognised distributer. ie no go for average joe.

Hi Guys this is my first thread and it seam you need some help. The best advice I acn give you is all on Radar roy's web site. He is a retired cop and a certifief traffic radar instructor in the USA. It has all the info you could ever need. Also the a new radar detector that has been released called the SPECTRE and it made in QLD, so theres a real chance that the police already have them. hears a snip from his artical.

Radar Detector Detectors

As radar detectors are illegal in the state of Virginia, Washington DC, in most commercial vehicles and in many parts of the world, there have been devices to detect radar detectors called Radar Detector Detectors (RDD). As all radar detectors leak a small amount of signal these RDD's are able to pick this up and alert the officer. The first RDD units were called VG2. VG2 looked for leakage within the 11 to 11.4 Ghz band. Soon there after , radar detector companies began using oscillators that were of higher frequency, thereby defeating VG2. To view the SML Laboratories testing results for VG2.

The Spectre is manufactured by Stealth Micro Systems in Queensland, Australia. The Spectre not only looks for leakage in the 11 Ghz. band, but also covers the 13 -15 Ghz bands. Radar Roy has purchased his own Spectre II to test all the newest radar detectors offered on Radar Busters and to date, has not found any radar detector on the market that is immune to this technology. Spectre Testing

Radar Roy brought out his Spectre II RDD to the Speed Measurement Laboratories testing site to compare it with the Texas Department of Public Safety's Spectre unit.

The Texas Department of Public Safety supplied the Spectre units for this testing. From contacts Radar Roy has in the industry, most, if not all of the Spectre I units in North America have been upgraded to the Spectre II. The Spectre III used in this test was a proto type and is scheduled to be sold to law enforcement in August of 2004. The following is the result of the Spectre testing:

Radar Roy learned from sources that the following test with the Spectre III maybe inaccurate. The Spectre is designed with a heat sensor set at 70 degrees to disable the unit, to prevent damage to the sensitive electronics. Once the unit cools to 70 degrees the unit will resume operation. As this test was performed in during the day at temperatures above 90, the results of this Spectre III may have been compromised.

There ilegal and a $1500 fine and you lose 4-6 points, if my memory serves me correctly. I would not bother getting one exspecialy with the spectre being out there.
