INASNT Member 361 Member For: 18y 5m 29d Gender: Male Location: Melbourne Posted 11/03/10 01:52 AM Share Posted 11/03/10 01:52 AM I heard a story, not sure if fact or myth, about someone being fined by a cop estimating their speed. They took the cop to court and while the cop was being questioned by the drivers lawyer, the lawyer slowly threw a tennis ball to the cop and asked him to catch it. When the cop caught it, the lawyer asked him to 'estimate' the speed of the tennis ball before he caught it. The cop had no answer and the case was thrown out.

And all you others. I was a traffic policeman for 10 years. I was classed as an expert in the Magistrates, County and supreme courts in relation to Motor vehicle and especially motor cycle collisions. I also tested myself over those 10 years agains various speed detection devices including hand held doppler radar, Digitector and elctrotector speed measuring devices (you young blokes wouldnt know those last two). I found that I was accurate with an estimation to within +/- 2%. I NEVER had an estimation thrown out and I prsecuted probably 5-7000 offences (not all estimations of course.Mate I was a fair copper, unlike some, and usually if I nabbed you, your were in the wrong. Onthe odd occasion there was the big mouth who talked himself into a ticket and less your a tree hugging left wing pinko, you would be subject to the same human frailties.99% of the people I booked said "Thank you" after I gave them the ticket. To this day I can sit on the side of the road and tell you a cars speed wo within 2-5ks. It is true that red cars go faster. Due to the Doppler effect shift in light waves (Colur is to lihght as pitch is to sound) the longer red light waves hit your eye deiffrently than blue light waves and as they approach it appears they are going faster.that's all physics and accepted laws.I have court rulings to say I could (im out of practice) estimate vehicle speeds accurately. If you want to test me, well meet up. You supply the radr, I'll supply the smarts. As far as the hoon laws are concerned. Don't start me.BUT if you ever want to get a reality check, pop on down to my place and I'll show you some pics from the 350 or so Fatal prangs I attended. Not pretty and I'm very sure, if youve had lunch, you will revisit it and maybe slow down for ten minutes on the way home.As for tennis ball catching, that wouldn't be admitted I'm afraid. That is a story of legend I thing.Someone threw a tennis ball at me in court he would be done for contempt. Not on I'm afraid. So guys, just settle. I'm only trying to give you my persepctive now that I've come over from the dark side. I am open to all the problems you guys have. I don't have any protection. I have 372 KW to nurse and can lose my licence and my car as easy as the next bloke. I don't like the hoon laws...when they affect me, and I don't like speed cameras. I think they are revenue raisers. A fair booking is one done in person by a copper in my book. I know that when I saw quality in a car and not just a sh1theap, I would appreciate the car with the owner. But I cant speak for all the others and dont label me as though I booked your mother. (I probably did, but I didn't know you then)

Bel STI if you have the money or whistler pro78 if your on a budget. I NEVER DRIVE A CAR WITHOUT MY STI. When I got my licence in 1980 the roads were a bit easier to drive on. It was not uncommon to pull up at the lights and see a monaro pull up next to an XY and they both leave in a cloud of smoke. Those were the days. They are laser not radar so they have a much smaller beam spread & by the time you pick them up it's normally too late. Radar 'bounces' off stuff in all directions so it's much easier to detect than laser.www.radars.com.au will fix you up with a 'parking sensor' which jams laser but you will go if they catch you with it. Up until recently there was a bit of a grey area with the rules about jammers in WA but I think they've tightened up on it.
boost69 Donating Members 737 Member For: 19y 9m Posted 16/02/11 10:46 PM Share Posted 16/02/11 10:46 PM Beltronics STI Driver or the Passport Redline...essentially the same company makes these and they have very little leakage making them undetectable. The thing is with laser guns by the time the detector goes off the police laser gun will already have a read out on you. This is why if you want total protection you need to supplement the radar detector with a jammer which will actually jam the police laser. This will involve mounting antennas on the front and rear of the car so even that will look obvious in itself. On the hand if a cop is pointing their laser gun at your car and the read out is gibberish then they are very likely to pull you over and search for a jammer anyway. If you want to pick up radar such you can have the radar detector hidden as long as its not hidden behind metal. If you want to pick up laser the radar detector has to be placed on the car where there is direct access to light (I.e. windscreen ...or dash)...hence it will be fully visible. This will make you even more paranoid about cops than if you didn’t have a radar detector and were speeding. So it’s not like you will be able to drive around at ease with the radar mounded on your dash...Then there is the scenario where you are doing the right thing and get pulled over because the cop sees it on your dash...and that carries 9 demerit points...
