Has anyone got one of these radar detectors?

http://www.radars.com.au/radar_detectors/w...ar-detector.php

They seem pretty decent, and there is videos of it working here in Western Australia.

I can pick a new one up relatively cheap and I'm thinking of getting one. plus the blue lights will match the gauges and interior lights in the car :beerchug:

It depends on how much warning you want and how much money you have to spend. My personal detector is a Beltronics STI and it will give between 100-400m warning on multinovas ,wereas the whistler pro 78 when tested against the bel STI gives reduced warning. Sometimes less than Half distance. The whistler 78 retails for $595 in Wa but can be had for $250 on Ebay. The bel sti costs over $1000 in Wa and can be had for about $600 on Ebay. Detecters bought overseas may give problems if a warranty claim is needed. The Bel STI is not legal in other states but has a magnesium cover and is indicated to be radar detector, detector proof. If you mostly drive only marginally over the speed limit and want to avoid the annoying 6-8 over the limit buy a Pro 78, but if you are like the usual TURBO CREW go the BEL STI. An escort 8500 x50 is also an excellent detector and can be bought in either red or blue display. Pro 78 is blue only and STI is red only. In the end you really do get what you pay for. I have read the escort 9500 and bel 65 are not as good as the STI or 8500 X50, but both are indicated to be superior to the Pro 78. For the price, the Pro 78 is good value. Its a shame the dollar is on the slide.Arron

Cheers Arron, lots of handy info there.

I'm leaning towards one of those remote mounted ones, so I dont need the radar detector sitting up there on the windscreen... something like the Bel STi-R.

They cost a fair bit more, but considering if you car gets impounded (hoon laws) it costs $500 to get your car out plus not to mention the cost of the fine and stuff like that, suddenly a $800+ radar detector doesn't seem THAT expensive :P

valantine 1 is the best detector for WA

the sti is a better detector but the valantine is better suited to wa

it has a narrowband feature specifically to detect multinova speed cameras and does give the best warning.

the sti does not have this feature

I have an sti and its ok but would recommend the v1 after seeing a mates in action.

The whistler 78 retails for $595 in Wa but can be had for $250 on Ebay.

Just purchased one from Ebay yeaterday for a mate, US$119.99 plus a little for postage...

I disagree that the Whistler will protect only from minor excursions over the limit.... last time my detector saved my licence I had time to slow right down, and even then I sat there like a half-sucked fat for ages before the revenue coll.. I mean multanova.. came into view.

If you disable the useless 'X' band detection then it will rarely go off for anything that is not a speed detection device... although it still does sometimes... in those cases you just glance at the (good looking blue) screen and read the signal strengh... if it less than a certain value then you know that it is going off because of the nearby servo or shopping centre door.

I can't vouch for any other detector, although I'm sure their are better units out there... with a price. I can however, say that the Whistler is quite a good little piece of kit.

Cheers Kael.
