Here's the thing... im not to familiar on the exact law or if it's just for SA or Australia wide...

But I think now that in SA drag racing is an actual criminal offence and cars are now being crushed..

can anyone elabarate about the criminal offence thing... as before I believe it was a traffic offence?

is it like that in other states?

I personally think it isnt particularly fair over here as we don't even have a drag strip... the closest one is heathcote (8 hour drive).

I'm not condoning stupid behaviour on the roads... but I think it's unfair to penalise genuine car enthusiasts by not havin places to "stretch our legs"...

It's like tellin Michael Jordan if he picks up a basketball he's going to go to jail.

lets be fair.... everyone on here boosted their cars up for a reason...

personally I want to go fast...speed is my thing...and I love getting agood time at the strip... and the government is telling me I have to drive 8 hours to go to a place where I can...

in SA our premier has never even held a drivers licence... so I don't know how much hope we have...

Whats the situation in other states???

And whats the criminal offence stuff about??

Please elabarate if any of you can....

As far as I know Malalar was still around and you can "stretch your legs" there.

Just because there is no drag strip, should not mean it is acceptable to street race.

It is like saying that because there is no shooting range nearby, it is ok to fire a gun in public.

From what I understand the S.A Government is just updating their stupid anti hoon laws. There are also many driving offences that are criminal.

DUI, dangerous driving causing death/injury and many others. It is a bit dumb if they make "hooning" a criminal offence, because "hooning" is more an opinion than an actual action. Doing a burnout is hooning, street racing is hooning, speeding is hooning, soon any driving that is not within the boundaries of our road rules will be considered "hooning".

It is great that our dumb governments and excitable media are all over the "hoons" when there are far greater threats on our roads.

as I said ZAP.. I'm not condoning stupid driving... but some of us enjoy seeing what time our car gets down the 1/4 mile... if u pull up next to sum1 at the lights and race that's what its about!... so for people that enjoy that... I think its needed for somewhere to do it... malala isnt for everyone...

mates got an old school car that he built for straight lines (wouldnt last a turn at speed at malala)... where can he go other than interstate to see what the engine he built does?

SO LIKE I DID SAY ZAP!!!! I'm not condoning stupid behaviour or racing and hooning... just think it wouldbe nice for a place that is badly needed in SA...

hooning is a fine line... if the weather is wet and you spin the wheels on take off even a tiny bit over ere on take off...u can get done... even if your not a "HOON"...

do cars get crushed in other states etc?

DUI either alcohol or ilegal drugs is actually not a criminal offence anywhere. Although the act of posessing ilegal drugs and using them is a criminal matter, driving under there influence is not.

Dangerous driving being the more common car related criminal offence is the one everyone on here would know about in some form. The others being murder and predatory driving.

Either inacted in criminal law or traffic law, the same jail terms can still equally apply. It sounds more of a PR stunt to change it. Our very own RTA has been guilty of such stunts for many years. No doubt we've all heard that drink driving is a crime. It isnt!! Just a traffic offence.

To answer your question.....Yes it is like that in other states, well NSW anyways, as I.B touched on above our RTA is guilty of similar hoon laws and yes they will crush our vehicles for illegal street racing. Dropping it on take off or driving like a deemed hoon will get you a fine and/or your car impounded for 3 months. I may not be 100% accurate upon the conditions of impounding or crushing but at the end of the day they have that power.

There are no such crusing laws in NSW, only vehicle confiscation. I dont know about the other states and frankly I dont see any real purpose. Just cause the governator does it in California does not mean it is suited here.

Taken from Car Advice late 2007 NSW to crush hoons’ cars : Car Advice | News | Reviews

“The modified, loud and often illegal vehicles confiscated from car hoons will be smashed to pieces in our crash labs, the results filmed and analysed, and the wrecks shown to other young drivers as a warning,” Mr Iemma said.

“The RTA [Roads and Traffic Authority] will also use the unique tests to investigate the potential effects of certain modifications on overall crashworthiness and we’ll show the wrecks at education days for young drivers, or at other RTA presentations,” he added.

Police Minister David Campbell has added that the footage will also be publicly aired to deter would be offenders from participating in hoon behaviour.

“Video footage of these once-prized possessions being turned into splintered, twisted scrap will be the clearest message yet to hoons that we’re serious about stamping out their behaviour and saving lives in the process

This is what Iemma wanted to do, don't recall if it was passed, this was pretty much the last I heard on the topic as admittedly never heard of it being enforced. I also remember talk of Victoria doing something similar. I've heard but don't quote that there was talk of confiscating/crushing cars in the UK for simply being uninsured
