G'day guys,

I am in the process of changing out my diff bush to get rid of that horrible clunking noise it makes when I drive it, and I was under the car the other day just to have a look at it and well, it looks completely different to any set up I have ever seen, in life and on the forum. I took some photos, and even if I am lookin at the wrong bush (I am fairly sure I'm not), the shaft that is sticking out the middle of the bush is actually rubbing on the spare-tyre well so yeah, I dont imagine it should be like this.

If this is not the usual diff bush, does anyone know what it is, or why there are 3 washers and a nut that just sit on the shaft protruding from the bush.

If anyone has any idea what this is, or why it is like this, then please offer your opinions :)

Cheers guys

It certainly looks like your bolt has been replaced with a different one.... It is not the original bolt for sure, so I guess they may not of had the same size bolt which may explain why it is sticking out so far.. The nut and washes no idea what or why they are there..

Could of just come loose but I doubt it, that would be almost all the way out LOL, you would of had some terrible knocking in the rear if it is all the way out.. Almost undriveable I would say.. Just my opinion/Guess hope it helps..

yeah I know, it looks f*cked to me hey, I am gonna get it up on a hoist next weekend and have a proper look underneath. Yeah ever since I bought it it made some knocking noises. I knew that the XR's were renound for the diff shudder, and mine was no exception. Its got a brass button clutch in it so I assumed, and from the advice from my mechanic friends, that would add to the shuddering/knocking.

I have a bad feeling that this is going to cost me a lot of money hey :crybaby:

Oh well, please keep the opinions coming :buttrock:

having a feel now, the stock bush is defiantly shagged. it is cracked and uneven and all sorts. Correct me if I am wrong, but normally there is just a bolt that slides though the bush into the diff, in the place of this shaft. This random shaft is defiantly connected to the diff considering when I pull it downwards the whole diff moves as well. So unless the dodgy *beep* before me snapped the original bolt and didnt have a spare, so stuck this shaft through with the nut and washers as spacers, and now the shaft has gradually started undoing and sliding further and further out...

Does anyone know the size/dimensions of the original bolt that came out of the diff? cause when I do the bush I am definitely going to replace that random shaft if I can.

That random shaft you're referring to, is actually a bolt.

It looks like what is called a caphead screw and will have an allen key hole in the end of it. Only way to fix that is to drop the whole rear subframe out to repair it, or use a holesaw and cut a hole in your spare tyre well to gain access to it.

I tend to agree with SPIKO about it being too long, and definately bodgy.
