Get your mate to remove your cat.

Turn it so that the side that will face the underbody of the car is facing up. Now take a grinder/oxy torch to it and cut out a flap.

Remove the innards of the cat and then re weld the flap down.

Reattach to your car and for all intents and purposes you have the stock cat in place.

I got a 5inch hi-flow cat for $290 off another forum, its got abit more drone to it now. IMO if your on a budget just wait till you have the money, how is your budget going to feel when you have a nice fine to pay. We all drive nice cars dont take short cuts.

Look at the forum joining dates of BJC and I. I don't know about him but my car still goes harder than a scalded cat and just had it's 120k service today. I bought it brand new in 2004 and drive it like a *beep* all the time.

Sacred? are you sure you're not scared (lol) to think outside the zone that the money tree drops it's fruit to?

And in the 8 years that my cat has needed veterinarian attention, I have never once been asked about it.

Like anything its a risk and your odds of getting done are low, but in this case the penalty is massive - something like upto 10k. As far as I'm concerned if you can't afford 300 odd bucks for a high flow cat then you shouldn't be trying to squeeze extra power out of any car. If you choose to gut it anyway you know what you have gotten yourself into.

The only reason I'd use a straight through pipe is for race fuel and you wouldnt be running that on the street unless you have some very deep pockets.

I agree it 'should' be done properly.. but budget comes into it aswell. if you were doing it properly then might aswell get a full turbo back exhaust + turbo mods.. but it adds up rather fast.

I was under the impression that if you get epa'd you have a chance to rectify the problems before your car gets tested? = no fine?

so I'm guessing it not worth the extra effort to weld a pipe through the middle of the cat? bash it all out and leave it at that? (for track use only yeah :spoton: )

MY BA has passed full EPA, bar blowing 91 over 90db (which is fixed with replacing gutted cat with 100cell) and 3point boost solinoid I had to hide. All emissions passed etc. Using all AVO gear and running big power. These BA/BF's are mad :D

Personally I wouldn't use a straight through pipe as any police fool would know by looking at it that's its dodgy. I would get a cat and gut it so it still looks as it should, then if they test on the side of the road and you fail atleast you can put up the argument that maybe the cat may have collapsed.

Better option than no cat at all!

To those people who say its highly illegal and you get big fines, let me tell you I passed pits 4+ times with a 3" straight through TBE on my WRX. 120db :) Had to get a silencer but they shared no care for lack of cat.

I run a straight through pipe on my car and not once has it been an issue. Its not louder than factory and its currently flowing to around 330rwkw.

Before everyone jumps on their high horses, lets not forget that half the things on our cars could be deemed illegal. Bald tyres, mods, tint et al

If they choose to fine me this mythical internet 10K fine, they'll be getting about $10 a week for the next 100 years :)
