There are no short cuts with ignition fella's, heat will be your biggest problem when you are keeping the status quo of coil in the rocket cover scenario, nothing on the market will perform as well down low and in the middle as the standard coils period... Higher rpm and racing applications that do not see much idle and lows is a different story.. And in that scenario most serious packages run aftermarket CDI's and externally mounted coil packs like M&W etc.. Just my humble opinion..

They are working on another product to work with the Weapon X coils. Will release more info as it comes to hand.

I hope that the other product to work with the coils is actually a securing addition for them to fit firmly in the rocker cavities Karl, because if not I suggest everyone keeps a set of Allan keys in the console for every time they come loose... This is all too often, I have nothing against Greg, he is a nice guy however this product needs more refinement.

I agree 100% Spiro. I certainly wont be promoting the product through Hiro until we get feedback from Hi Torque and my customer on how the product has performed. We will certainly pass on our non biased feedback to all within the fortnight.

I'd rather try the product first hand ourselves before making an opinion on them. We're not going to promote and sell a product we dont believe in, that's for sure.

I’ve always been one for improving ignitions systems.

I even ran a MSD & Mallory coil on my XB V8 back in the 70’s and swore by it.

I currently run a CDI on my STi that is set up to rev to 8000rpm.

I looked into CDI options a few years ago with my big motor on the Ford. That engine spins to around 7200 pretty regularly, and still makes good (over 600rwkw) power at that rpm without falling over, WITH standard coils.

To take development forward, I then read various M&W manuals, got pricing options, and reviewed HKS multi-spark options.

I also contacted MSD in the US about their “Stacker” product, and sent them a Ford wiring diagram for assessment, and they concluded that it could work and not interfere with the Ford canbus. I decided I did not want to be the guinea pig.

I asked Tunehouse to get data on the ignition voltage at different rpms for that Ford engine, how well the voltage was holding, and potential gains to be had with upgrading. The conclusion was that the stock system worked very well, (better than I expected) and that it was probably not worth the effort and cost when I was chasing extra power.

So I did not pursue it. Having not pursued it you cannot rule out that it could be beneficial.

On my STi the engine is noticeably very smooth above 5000, partly because it is well built motor, and because of the CDI. That is the car feels much better, of course in conjunction with a good tune.

With a multi-spark discharge and/or better spark at higher rpm you can also run bigger spark plug gaps, or alternatively not reduce the plug gap if that was what you were doing previously.

In a daily driver situation I doubt that the better coil will give you much benefit, and as Spiro stated it is better targeted at high rpm application, but then you really need CDI to get the most out of it.

If you are changing coils for reliability reasons then that is a valid reason.

In this case if you want to check the new coil attributes it would be best to do a voltage analysis, check before/after drivability, fuel consumption and dyno assess the change.

Then compare that with what the manufacturer has claimed.

Good luck,

Brian

Bloody Hell. This is becoming a bit of a soap opera, no low RPM power, coil leads jumping off :dontknow: . I can't be bothered with the potential drama, so I think at this stage I'm just gonna leave them in their box and wait and see :pooh: . I thought the bungs under the rocker cover held them in place so they couldn't come off? :turboboink:

Thanks Spiko. Well that said they can go sit on the shelf and shine happily there. I would burn this lemon POS if on top of all its factory fitted faults I also had to refit the coil leads every few days. Thanks for letting me know. :beerchug:

Thanks Brian.

Seeing there is nothing wrong with the factory coils, the "Too Hard Basket" seems to be the most appropriate course of action at the moment. At least the young bloke liked the sticker that came in the box.

They are not a perfect fit in the tubes but will not come off from the spark plug.

They need to be REALLY pushed home.

All that aside, I would not fit these with any confidence. From what I experienced,

they don't seem to fire all that consistently with the Factory controller.

The distributor also mentioned a possible issue with polarity??

Yes Hypo I do have a dedicated shelf at home as well where mine sit :beerchug:

I've tried these and they a have a locking mechanism on the plug. From my testing, they wont be coming loose.

Are they on your daily driver Steph?

I will not go into that polarity discussion Ego, however I must be one weak ass 110Kg bloke LOL
