Three Dead After P-Plater Driver'S Car Crashes

My personal opinion on some young people being invincible in cars is partly due to video games.

I believe they get the preception that they crash a car and it re-appears seconds later all good and undamaged in the game and that applies in real life too.

Laugh all you like but I'm sure it contributes during their brain fade actions before a crash.

Awesome recent gallery pics to be posted up at this time, and after Victoria. Burnouts in a car park or somewhere similar, can we take those off the site before the media shines the light on us as all lunatics.

Stupid NSW Labor laws which are easily flouted

In this article, the writers haven't checked their facts and claim that the XR6 Turbo is the fastest Falcon ever produced... err, I believe the FPV Typhoon is still a Falcon.

Bans 'easy' to get around

Bans 'easy' to get around

MATT CAMPBELL AND TOBY HAGON

February 7, 2010 YOUNG drivers are exploiting loopholes that highlight the inadequacies of laws that impose bans on the cars P-platers can drive.

While some NSW P-platers are being told they can't drive some of the safest and most economical cars on the market - and being fined if they do - some are finding innovative ways to apply for exemptions and others continue to flout the laws.

The Roads and Traffic Authority has granted 2151 exemptions to P-platers wanting to drive turbocharged, supercharged or V8 vehicles since the bans were introduced in 2005, some to P-platers driving high-performance vehicles.

Some P-platers are driving modified cars, Porsches, Subaru Impreza WRXs and the fastest Ford Falcon ever produced, the turbocharged XR6.

One 22-year-old P-plater, who can now apply for his full licence, has been driving a Subaru WRX, one of the fastest $40,000 cars on the market, because it was a work vehicle.

William Jreij said: ''I have my own business so I registered under the business name and they said they needed a letter from the employer, which was myself, because it was my own business.

''All you needed was an ABN and that was it. It's pretty dodgy, and I got around the system.

''It was pretty quick. It's just four or five pages you have to fill out, and they just need a letter from either your employer or your parent if it's your parent's car. It was very easy to get it.''

Mr Jreij said that he felt the exemption system was so full of loopholes that he wouldn't be surprised if people were taking advantage of it.

''You've just got to word it like you need it,'' Mr Jreij, of Northmead, said. ''You just call them up once you get the letter, and just say, 'It's urgent, can you please get it to me quickly,' and they just send it to you."

Shadow roads minister Andrew Stoner slammed the confusing regulations.

''When you have a situation where young drivers are being banned from driving some of the safest vehicles on the road but can get away with driving some of the fastest, it's clear that Labor's new P-plate restrictions simply aren't working,'' he said.

''The problem is that when people know a law is just plain stupid, they are more likely to flout it.

''It's time for Labor to go back to the drawing board on their P-plate policy and consider introducing new restrictions that take into account the safety features of a vehicle.''

Mr Jreij said: ''The way the police know about the exemption is very backwards.

''I found out they don't show the exemption on the computer system in the police car.

''The police have no idea that I have an exemption unless I have tht letter on me. It's just a hassle.''

Mr Jreij said he knew of other P-platers who drove banned cars without exemptions because they had no other option.

Some drivers remove identifying details, such as turbo badges.

In the case of a Falcon XR6 turbo, only a police officer who knew what he was looking for under the bonnet would be able to identify it as a turbo.

There are some police officers far from genius out there.. I was stopped at an RBT last week and they pulled me aside to do a defect check on my stock standard BA xr6 with the only mod an exhaust. the police officer looked high and low in the engine bay for anything that resembled a turbo or intercooler and even tapped the heat shield on the exhaust manifold with her torch. dont ask me why.. after finding nothing she let be go not before muttering f**king p platers as she walked away. I was waiting for them to pull out the measurement tool and check my ride height.

My friend has a VP Late model camira which sits on its bump stops. he was on ch 7 giving his opinion about street racing mid way through last year. When the police did a defect check they questioned him about all the bricks in his boot and the lack of spare wheel. my friend replied with " its because my car sits too low and I cant get the jack under to change the wheels so I drive up on the bricks. The police left him with a yellow label for a lack of brake lights and that's it

Motivational media and driver training. Not the training that you get off your mum, dad, or other relation, but throw them in a heavy high power car in a controlled environment, put out some scenarios and practical tests with dummies dressed up as the general public (eg mother with baby in a pram), let the kid loose and see what reaction they have when they realise that they really aren't the Jamie Whincup that they thought they were, and the cars don't react the way in the movies they watch or as said earlier in the video games they play. Then teach them what the safety systems in these cars do and how they work. I bet you half the p platers that jump into modern cars wouldn't know what ABS feels like until they are in a situation where they have to use it....well for some that is too late. Same thing with aqua-planing, again get the driver in a controlled environment and aqua plane the car and teach them practically what to do in the situation. I think this would have a greater impact than putting laws up and band-aiding the problem. This is far from a case of money but who knows the extra money they spend on PROPER driver training could be recouped when they are scraping up fewer people off the streets.

RUS531 - I'm exactly with you on this.

I've now had my XR6T since Dec 08 and have yet to push it's limits on the road as I don't want any adverse consequences.

I've booked myself into a driver training course using my car so I can learn the limits of the car.

How fast can I go before I slide? What do I do when the car does slide? How long will it take to emergency brake in the wet?

These are things I need to learn & find out in the event something like this happens on the road.

I have a family with 3 kids and don't want to leave them daddyless due to something that could be avoided.

Pfft of course it was "street racing" because you all know that you cannot have a crash unless your A. Racing B. Being a hoon C. P plater and male and D. Speeding of any kind.

Condolences goes to the families, this sort of thing shouldn't happen.

Can anyone confirm it was actually a turbo?

I'm beginning to think it is another case of mainstream media/propaganda trumping up a story.

yes it's tragic that 3 kids died, but the media loves tragedy.
