Three dead after P-plater driver's car crashes in Colyton

THREE young people have died after their car struck a power pole in Sydney's west, police say.

A male passenger was killed instantly while the male P-plate driver and a woman in the back seat died in hospital following the smash at Colyton today.

Police say their XR6 turbo Ford Falcon left the Great Western Highway about 3.15am and crashed into a power pole.

A third young female passenger sustained serious leg injuries, while another escaped unscathed.

All are believed to be aged in their late teens or early 20s.

The eastbound lanes of the highway are closed between Sydney Street and Bennett Road, but are expected to reopen shortly.

If it's a Turbo, what's a P plater doing driving it?

Have you read today's Herald? Apparently you can apply for exemptions, if it's a work car, registered under the business and you need to drive it for "work purposes" you just need your employer - that's you if you own the business - to fill out a stat dec and a few forms and you're on your way after paying the $29 fee.
