I thought the PCM would jump in and retard the timing etc. I've been using only 98octane since new; until last month when I couldn't find any 98octane around a country town that I used 95 and discovered the problem. My G6ET was built in Jun08 and now has 27,000KM on the clock.

Anyone's turbo exhibits similar problems?

Certainly shouldn't be...it could have been sh*t fuel that's potentially clogged your filter. Was it a low-turnover/dodgy servo?

Have run 95 in mine a few times without any dramas (and bugger all noticeable difference)

As it turned out, it wasn't the engine pinging/knocking but the dang turbo heat shield (the large piece) rattling at it touched the turbo from 2000rpm to 2500rpm.

I ditched the turbo heat shield and no more rattling/pinging noises!

Now I hope the turbo doesn't fry any rubber/plastic things near it, ie hoses, coolant overflow container etc.

Had my ute pinging after some bad fuel at a local, and that was supposedly '98 octane'(Shell Thornleigh South bound). Funnily, my tuner asked what I had filled it up with as soon as backed it up on the dyno. That same week my uncle had an error code on his Lexus IS250 and Lexus told him that he had put in some bad fuel. Turns out that we had visited the same servo that week. Must have been a REAL dodgey batch!

Haven't been back since!

Unfortunately the Ute had nothing to say as far as warnings....just a noticable knock at idle....didn't notice it at all when moving however my tuner did luckily.

I would seriously consider refitting the shield and give it a tweak or two so it doesn't rattle. Turbo engines put out significant heat (torque=horsepower=heat) and can fry most things known to man.

The radiated heat can be pretty phenomenal if driven hard.

I run 91 in the g6et, but of late I've been using 94ULP from Liberty, and it all works perfectly fine. Have run 95 before, but there is no difference bar the higher price.

I initially ran 95 in my BFII and it ran without a problem until about 30,000 and it would gently ping under WOT. I started using 98 and havent looked back. I was a tad annoyed that my baby developed a tasted for the heavy stuff. But what ya gunna do.

I'd be putting the heat shield back on too.
