Help all boost experts,

A noticeable impact was evident on Saturday at our RDP dyno day, one good blast on the rollers was fine but a 2nd showed between 10-40 rwhp loss due to an increase in Intercooler temperature. To solve this a water filled 1.25 litre coke bottle was shaken over the offending unit & whammo, immediate power increase. So tootling around in this summers heat will definately diminish our cars performance.

As a thinker/tinker I'm already designing a remedy involving a water spray bar to be pump fed by an Ice/water filled esky that'll be located under the car next to spare wheel well.

Also the dash top gauge with boost pressure could also conatin an intercooler temperature device that'll tell me when I need to douse the heat.

Please crittize me with past experiences, not just airy fairy carry on, unless you feel compelled to. All rude inuendo will be received gladly.

Also how long will dry ice last in this esky with the location described.

Scotty

How about liquid nitrogen instead of frozen CO2? :pimp:

Ah yes, the old heat vs turbo dilemma. As the old saying goes, there ain't any such thing as a free lunch, and whilst the humble turbo works great in moderate temps, hot summer days will certainly drop the horsepower a bit.

Not sure about your esky idea. On a hot day you'll empty the contents in about 20kms. Suppose you can fill it with beer instead and have it pumped into the cabin via a hose.........

Seriously, you can't take shortcuts here. To fix that problem you'll have to fit a bigger intercooler. If it won't fit, too bad. Mate, there's stuff-all that you can do about it.

By all means do the water bit.

However, the temperature of the water will no tmake too much difference as it will be instantly cooling by evaporation anyway.

There are lots better ways and I'll try to post some at a later date.

BrentS,

the idea is to give it a squirt say 10 secs or so, when you'll benefit, for full throttle applications only. Tap water shouldn't increase in temperature too much as it'll be away from exhaust.

Thanks for input, I'm constantly refining my design.

Hey kt water spray like mine had on saturday, only 5 kw difference between runs not bad.I am looking at a pwr intercooler at the moment it is designed to fit in the standard spot.

There is one more important problem with the modified cars and that is the limition of the cooling system I noticed on the way home on saturday that the car ran a lot hotter. As I am planing more boost I am ordering an pwr rad tomorow to give some saftey margin in the cooling system.

Hey Ian,

wish I'd gotten there earlier as your car was just finished & I didn't get to see under the hood. Could you not give your water spray a blast to cool your water temp as well whilst driving? What capacity does it have & what pump are you using?

I'm going to use one of those Davies Craig electric pumps used to replace OEM water pumps. A bit of overkill maybe but I'll carry around 6-10 litres & they can be adjusted as far as flow goes.

I posted previously the question about performance loss during summer due to heat and suggested maybe a bigger intercooler would help but people said no.

In another more recent thread BLKXR6T and Street Tuner had some 'discussion' on the merits or otherwise of water spray. Can't recall what the name of the thread was, it was only a couple of days ago.

I've seen lots of different intercooler spay setups on various turbo cars. Some are bought as a kit that can come on when the throttle reaches a certain % and I've seen some quite neat home made jobs from an extra windsceen washer bottle and garden sprinkler nozzles. None the less they are very effective. I think that the two door STI come with them standard.
