Unusual problem happened a few days ago.

I've had my car for just over a year and for the first time yesterday when I indicate left (and only left for some reason)

my cars dashboard stops illuminating for a split second and then comes back on

The actual speedo and revs keep working its just the back light.

I can't think of anything that I've done to hav caused it!!!!

I took a look at the fuses, fine, would hav totally gone out if it was the issue

Opened up the steering coloumn to see if I can see some significant damage, burnt wires or the like and... nothing that I could see that was obvious to the untrained eye

Anyone hav any ideas??? Or will I hav to take it down to ford???

Check that your parker/tail lights are working as they are part of the same circuit as the dash lights. You most likely have a faulty indicator stalk, is pretty common.

Thanks for the tip BensXR6T!!!

I took apart the whole steering wheel setup tonight and found the problem... one little red wire

It had split in the middle of the indicator stalk!!!! A bit of solder and masking tape and DONE

Took a while to take the steering apart especially with the airbag (yes I unplugged the battery but its still scary!!!)

All in all its done and fixed :roflmbo:

No worries buddy, glad you got it fixed :buttrock:

Might wanna change the masking tape for a abit of heatskrink though, the movement of the stalk might wear through the tape and cause a short.

Yeah airbags can be scarey and hurt like hell when they go off.

Cheers,

ben

was just about to post asking if anyone knew which fuses I should look at cos im having the exact same problem when I saw this lol. first started last year with the auto headlights..every time I turned left or right lights would go and come back on when I finished or vice versa. now yesterday, pulling into the service station, indicated left and click all instrumentation lighting went off, for good this time.

Been looking for an excuse to rip apart a part of the car, good fun..until I have to put it back together again. bit scared with the airbag though..when you put it back is there a special way you have to fold it/put it in again or something? dont know anything about them..

OMG my car has EXACTLY the same issue, same little wire!! I need to get the instructions to get the wheel off, so I can get in and solder it too. Did you solder it in place or take the assembly off all together? Also, were there any special tools required to take off the wheel?

This is obviously a design flaw, the wire getting pinched continuously in the indicator stalk. I hope none of the other wires get pinched and broken in the future. Might be worth some extra tape/tubing to provide some mechanical strength.

AFF Technical Resources - Content im following that. guessing the security bits can be bought at supercheap? or do you have to buy them from ford?

also I had a peep through the hole on the side of the steering column at the stalk and the wires all appeared to be fine and closely packed but I guess theres only one way to be certain. I still dont understand how it would cause the lights to go of while you indicate and then come back on again though. shouldnt it be fine until it rubs through the wire completely and it cuts and goes off permanently?
