Downshifting From 3Rd To 2Nd Problems

Hey guys.

Got my car this week, BA mk2 xr6 turbo with the 6 speed manual. Everything about the car is great EXCEPT for one minior yet annoying problem. Shifting up the gears works fine, 1st to 2nd, 3rd to 4th etc. However when shifting down the gears, it is REALLY hard to get it to go into 2nd gear. Like it doesn't crunch in or anything, it just REFUSES to go in. I can usually get around it by shifting to N, letting the clutch out, then trying for 2nd again, or partially go into 1st then back into 2nd. It is quite frustrating as you can imagine, often by the time I have found 2nd, I may as well be using 1st.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? Every other gear there is no problem, and going from 1st to 2nd works fine, its only when going from 3rd to 2nd.

I have a BA MkII also with the 6 Speed, had the same issue but also 2nd up to 3rd was a pain. After changing the clutch fluid and also the transmission oils I noticed a massive difference. Only thing is if you use transmax or mainlube for tranny oil your gear changes will be very tough and notchy when cold, once it warms up massive difference.

change your gearbox fluid to transmax or mainlube. transmax is around $120, whereas mainlube is $350.

I use mainlube for a various array of benefits, including long life. also the mainlube oil is made specifically for gearboxes, whereas the transmax is actually auto fluid, so it doesnt provide the full protection you need.

good luck with it :)

Hmm that's some expensive oil! I have changed the engine oil on all my previous cars but never done gearbox oil before. Is it difficult?

Its strange how every gearshift works fine and smooth except for one. Guess I will have to try the oil change and see.

Yeah, I used mainlube but it lasts A LOT longer than transmax so it works out better over the long run, plus its a better oil. But yeah its more $$$. If your planning on keeping the car long term I would recommend mainlube any day. I got my tranny oil tested after a year and perfect, but I also installed the mainlube supplied magnetic bung plug to pick up all little floating bits of metal.

Gear box oil is easy, get under the car and on the drivers side of the box will be the drain plug, on the passengers side will be the fill plug. Given its tight access I used a bit of hose to refill the gear box and ran the hose to the engine bay to refill. Alternatively you can buy a little hand pump from supercheap for $20, it took no more than 1/2 hour to complete. BUT, before replacing the oil buy some cheap engine oil and fill the gearbox with that first and take the car for a little drive to flush the transmission. Then drain the cheap oil so it removes all the little metal particles and other nasties then refill with transmax or mainlube. Some people recommend 2 flushes of the gear box. When refilling just keep pumping in oil until it overflows out of the fill hole and your done. nothing else to it.

That's great info 'BLK6T'!

My 6sp AUTO is clunking every now and then when engaging 3rd gear while up shifting at slow speeds. At higher speeds with more throttle, all is fine. So I will be definitely doing that trans oil change! I didn't think it was that easy! Thanks again mate!

The oil change in the 6 speed Auto is a little different than the manual. Unless your confident and know what your doing id leave it to the pros.
