Great Ocean Road Cruise 2010 (was Otways Cruise)

DATE: Sunday 7th February 2010

TIME: 9am Departure (later start for you sleepy heads )

DESTINATIONS: Princes Highway, Geelong, Apollo Bay (Lunch), Great Ocean Road, Lorne and Angahook Lorne State Park.

DESCRIPTION: This cruise heads south west from Melbourne to take in world famous the Great Ocean Road.

This cruise route is all on sealed roads and is based on the one TUFXRT6 designed back in 2007. Starting in Melbourne, there will be some smooth eye-catching XRs in-a-line freeway cruising along the Princes Highway towards Geelong - paying homage to the hometown from whence all our cars come from in a file of XRs down Geelong's main throughafare. Pit stop at the Wordibuluc wier then step back in time in quaint township of Birregurra for another pitstop before heading down the heady twists into Skenes Creek before reaching our lunch stop at moon crescent Apollo Bay. After a hearty lunch at the Apollo Bay Hotel (tabled booked for us), off onto the next highlight of the cruise which is the world famous and beautifully scenic curvacious coastal cliff hugging black strip that is the Great Ocean Road (with the sun behind us to maximise the views and driving experience). Reaching Lorne, we'll take a brief pitstop, before heading in-land for some more twisties through Angahook Lorne State Park / Deans Marsh. Cross over the Princes Highway to reach the Hamilton Highway so as to arrive in north Geelong, thus avoiding the queues crossing the bridge back into Geelong. From there, it's easy freeway cruising back into Melbourne.

DURATION: Approximately 7 hours including lunch. As a courtesy to your fellow cruisers, please have a full tank upon departure. This is a long cruise - and it should go without saying that you can join/leave at anytime.

PLEASE ENSURE YOU HEAD TOWARDS THE TODD RD SERVICE ROAD - IT'S A BIT TRICKY NOW WITH ALL THE ROAD CHANGES LEADING UP THE WESTGATE BRIDGE!

Apollo Bay Hotel, 95 Great Ocean Rd, Apollo Bay

BRING:

Optional, but strongly recommended, UHF 40 channel CB Radio to keep across road hazards and general chatter. It truly adds to the experience if you have a CB, even if it's a $35 Dick Smith one! However, EvilDaifu has a few CBs for free loan on the cruise if anyone is interested - just PM EvilDaifu to reserve one.

Camera for the photo opps and the views.

Coinage for lunch and fuel.

RULES:

1. Obey all laws whilst on the cruise; this means no speeding, no overtaking over double lines (no matter how safe you think it may be), etc...

2. There is a designated cruise leader who will lead the way and set the correct pace for all cruise members.

3. Use the Buddy system - always make sure you can see the car behind you. This will give people behind you an indication on where to turn to make sure nobody gets lost.

4. CB Radios - if you don't have one, follow the maps and directions given out. It is highly recommended to have CB as it enhances the enjoyment of the cruise being able to hear about road hazards and join in on the social chatter.

5. Please turn up to the meeting points with a sufficient fuel in your tank and enough time before the departure time.

Hey mate, do we reply here? If so, im definatly coming Looks like an awesome route and hopefully have some stuff done to the car, have a bit of fun cruising the twisties lol (not doing anything illegal of course, but its always fun to have some extra power on tap)

Too long. Cut out Lavers Hill and head straight into Apollo Bay and we can organise a BBQ, more social than just driving around.

It is long - don't deny that as I went on it back in 2007, but not longer than what I would care to do when I go for a drive. We generally get together at lunch time in the same place - suggesting Georges and I will try to book it closer to the date so we can all be sitting at the same table and there are plenty of pitstop breaks along the way for coffees/smokos. The Lavers Hill section is better than the Anglehook section for corners in my opinion so I wouldn't want to cut that out. I've suggested an earlier start of 8:30am compared with the 2007 run to help us get home on time as well.
