im after some opinions from people.

is manually downshifting in the 4 speed auto bad for the box?

im not talking anything excesive, usually while slowing down I would probably drop it back to third around 65 - 70kays then to 2nd at around 45 - 50kays, then let it go into first its self once im stopped.

at those speeds though you can still feel it engine braking.

ill be getting a tune soon to the high 200rwkw maybe very low 300rwkw mark and all ill be doing to the box is a service and a transcooler.

but id like to give the gearbox the best chance it has :P,

ideas? the thought of it harming the box never really crossed my mind until now.

cheers.

An old transmission mechanic said to me, it would prematurely wear out the perishable parts inside the g box, at a faster rate then when you dont use it. Or You play you pay

I've been driving my boxes like that for years. I drive my rebuilt BTR like that and it still shifts and feels as crisp as day 1. It may wear down hard parts a little more but it's fun :)

I was told not to do it, reason being as said above, excessive wear etc.. If you wanna prolong the life of ya tranny I dont think its wise..

fair enough, whenever I have to suddenly brake on the road I seem to do it without even thinking now days.

maybe ill just do less then downshift when im ready to accelerate again. I just hate the car choosing the gear for me!!!

I dont down shift as you dont really need to and those speeds you are talking about shifting down are too high, if I was going to down shift id try to stay in 3rd until I drop to 30 km no higher

I downshift all the time, my gearbox is stock and running just over 300rwkw (not that it matters when your not on the gas!). Have done so for over 40k now with no problems.

I always downshifted in Brisbane through the Toowong hills so I was in 2nd gear down the hill so I didn't have to brake at all for the 300mt's of it.

At the same token I wouldn't put it back to 2nd gear while doing near 100km/h so be sensable with it.
