Scully puts brakes on car ads

By LILLIAN SALEH Political Reporter

September 25, 2003

ADVERTISEMENTS featuring speeding, high-powered cars could soon be banned from TV screens.

Roads Minister Carl Scully will today call for "inappropriate and dangerous" ads to be dumped and for manufacturers and advertisers to abide by a mandatory code of practice.

He called the current voluntary code a "toothless tiger" that allowed speed to feature prominently in car ads.

Mr Scully, who will today open the 2003 Road Safety Research, Policing and Education Conference, said the advertisements were "too much of a temptation for hoons and speedsters" and did nothing to encourage safe driving.

More than 570 people were killed on NSW roads last year, with speed the cause in almost half of all fatal accidents.

"My job is to encourage people to drive appropriately to lower the road toll," Mr Scully yesterday told The Daily Telegraph.

"The complete opposite message is being pushed to sell these vehicles."

Mr Scully will next month seek the support of interstate counterparts at a meeting of state roads ministers before lobbying the Federal Government to establish a mandatory code of practice.

The Advertising for Motor Vehicles Voluntary Code of Practice applies to all ads shown in Australia, regardless of when they were produced.

The use of "motor sport, fantasy, humour and self-evident exaggeration in creative ways" is permitted.

Advertisers are also asked to be "mindful of the importance of road safety and to ensure that advertising for motor vehicles does not contradict or undermine efforts to achieve improved road safety outcomes in Australia".

In the past year the RTA made 42 complaints to the Advertising Standards Board (ASB) over what it called "highly inappropriate" advertising.

The complaints involved ads for Expensive Daewoo Monaro, Mazda, Lexus and Mistubishi. The ASB upheld two of the complaints and the ads were pulled.

I think that he should also ban car racing, because if a 30 second commercial make people speed, imagine a 12 hour race.

What a load of crud, we are paying more taxes, getting over governed more and more everyday, and we still get treated like kiddy kids.

How are they ment to advertise a hot car like a XRT,XR8,GT ect.. what do they want it to go out and around a 4x4 doing 20kmh jezse, what a load of trash it gets anoying when there are so many nice cars and now they will have to advertise them in a garage or carport kind of scene (rx8). I like the falcon add would that be classed as a wreckless act of speed?????

Although this may inflame some members,

Most of the ads that I have seen recently that appear to breach "safe" guidelines have been Expensive Daewoo ones!

The Slalom down the house driveway towards the kid around all his toys scattered around. THe circle work in the field, (or the paddock).

And others.....

While we are at it, I just saw an ad for VB on the TV quick where's the car I MUST go and buy a slab JUST BECAUSE I JUST SAW IT ON TV!

I realyl wish that some people would get a life and realise that just because its on TV not EVERY person in the world is going to do exactly what is in the ad!

How many people actually own a Late model camira SS sedan out of the total proportion of cars on Australian roads!

If car advertising promotes speed, then ban advertisements for rugby, league, AFL and cricket because they promote competitive behaviour, violence and comraderie!

Enough is enough. If you vote for these bastards you are also voting for banishment of better performing vehicles.

You can;t have one without the other,

Scully doesn't have a drivers license. Carr doesn't have a drivers license.

Voting for these Commo's to get taxpayer funded schools, hospitals and anything else, means you are voting for a Government that will quite happily rape the motorist to keep their voters happy!

The more you get from the Govt. the more you pay for in tax, one way or another.

That means that the motorist is the millenium cash cow, and if they wanted to save lives they would train people in the necessary skills. They don't because they know it is a source of revenue!

Yes Scully and his ilk make me angry because they are not the reason I do my job! I love Highway Patrol because I can go after the recidivist traffic offender: not the PSC who breaks the law every now and then ! (PSC means Poor Simple C......)

PSC.......I LIKE it!!

Liberal voter are we??........Personally I agree plonky, and have said so in previous posts......While our collective butts point to the ground there is no way any government is going to condone serious reform and legislate proper driver education because it is a drain on revenue not a revenue cash cow.......until the people let their representatives know that the blatant 'highway robbery' our governments are conducting will not be tolerated the more they will do it.

But what really makes me mad is, we have a liberal opposition now attacking the government on their multi-nova policy and tight allowance on speeding, and it was these smarmy ba$tards who increase the number of multi-novas, and you can bet your last 'front bar exchange docket' that they will do diddly squat if/when they get into power .......AAAArgh.....politicians are a pox on society  ........rant end! :D

that's true Silverhawk.... I am as right wing as can be, only because I believe in reward for hard work and everybody is not equal

I see what those don't !! The ones that get everything for no return I.e: Do nothing and get rewarded by their lack of effort by taxpayer funded (drugs, smokes and grog) entertainment as well as housing and transport.

The State Govts: know this and the small 'l' liberal voters will continue to vote for a 'socialist' government that experiments with social engineering to assuage their personal guilt so they can sleep at night.

I won't be a part of it and I will continue to troll the peasant areas in an attempt to recoup the outrageous tax I pay for the long hours (over 70 per week) that I work to make enough money to enjoy my Mustang and Dodge!!!!

Agree 100% Plonky. Everyone in this world is different. Some like to work 7 days a week to have the best of everything, others are happy working part-time for less cash and no stress, and many others fall somewhere in between. I'm sick to death of these trendy social engineers who seem to want to make me feel guilty if I earn an extra 80 cents per hour than the next guy, or buy a better car etc.

I've also had a gutful of being told what to do and when to do it, only because some simple-minded dimwit somewhere may take offence or suddenly get an overwhelming desire to do something unlawful etc. Why are our lives having to be led by the lowest common denominator of society???

OK, I've calmed down now..............

Plonky, you hit a nerve with me when you refer to people getting their lives handed to them on a silver platter, e.g., welfare.

Even in my not-so-distant family, I get ridiculed for "being rich" ... jealously is an easy way out. The number of times I've expained to them that we have what we have because we've worked long and hard to be where we are now.

Both SWMBO and I have made many a sacrifice to pull ourselves up out of the primordial ooze of young married poverty. 16 hour days, night shifts, long periods of being apart, veggiemite sandwiches for dinner, etc., etc.

It just really pisses me off!!!!

I say let the lazy, worthless, no-hopers starve to death ... least that way they won't f*cking breed!
