Rear Suspension "Bang"

Mate it does sound like it's topping. Well to me from here anyway.

When you put on new suspension you DON'T tighten the hell out of it. Like everything else you have to bed them in. With good dampers as you have fitted it takes about 1,000 k's to get them fluid. As in working at a slow rate.

Then after your 1,000 k's you need to take it back and have it retensioned and realighned. Same as when you replace the bushes.

This is not a tuner trying to get more bucks out of you it's just how it should be done. If you want your stuff to perform at it's best and last.

But as you say you had it before the new stuff. mmm.

I would be checking your upper and lower mounting bolts. Are they the correct diamiter? are they strait. You can tighten the hell out of them but if they are not a correct fit then when the spring returns to it's static hight, the damper will resist as it does and if there is a gap between the bolt and the mount, clunk. And being that the mounting bolts are retained when changing over to the new stuff, this has led me to this conclusion.

Trying to move the dampers or bang them on the car even when you take the weight off the springs will not really show you if it's the bolts. You will need to take them out and check.

on level ground jack the car up back the nuts/bolts off and then lower the wheels onto blocks and then lock them back up, The most common problem I,ve seen is when (because of time :beerchug: ) a tech will lock all the bolts up in the air and then the bushes twist when its level on the ground, see how it go's

fix a fare few rattles like that

All the items were fitted by workshop and the noise was there previously. Id hoped fitting new gear would fix it.

Anyway, its booked into Ford on Monday. I was going to go to Pedders first but I hate playing one agains the other. If they cant fix it then Ill go elsewhere.

Ill keep you posted but I would have thought others would have experienced this as I had iot on the BA I recently got rid of.

Tell them your credit card is almost maxed after xmas, and they will need confirmation from you before proceeding with any work required to repair the vehicle.

Or better still put this on a letter to them including describing your problems.

It wont get it fixed but it will stop you from being raped with no spit.

My approach to them was thus. I have gone after market with shocks and springs because you guys couldnt find the fault. Well it isnt shocks and it isnt springs which means is FORD components. (Oh and it isnt diff bush either).

SO no, I'm not paying, and dont intent behind screwed unless someone buys me a drink first.

Anyway, my credit card IS maxed out, and the ex wife got all my money, even though I got the house the car the kids and the dog. lol.

Hi guys. Just an update. Thoughts appreciated.

Tork my car to my local Ford dealer. The service guys are really approachable so warranty wasn't an issue for the rear end (as it shouldn't be)

Anyway, after having the car a few hourts got a call that they wanted me to come down as they couldn't fault the rear.

Ok, so I go down with intention of going for a drive with the mechanic.

Now firstly, those of you who have not see the Nizpro 4" exhaust are in for a bit of a shock as it is bl**dy huge. So of course when I get down there the service manager grabs me and says when they got the car on the hoist all the mechs in the workshop gathered around and couldn't believe how good it looked and the workmanship. (Small smile on my dial there)

But I digress.

The mechanice said that he beleived the "bang" was defiately shock noise and was coming from the top mounting of the shock.

Ok, so that opens up a couple of possibilities I guess.

Perhaps, despite them being brand new, the shocks havent been tightened properly on the car at the top when it was on its wheels (as suggested earlier in this thread)

I am hoping that's the case and I'll have a look when I can actually go outside and not get cooked by the sun.

I have the same problem atm , ive had the car up on stands today gave everything a shake a push lifted the control arms up checked over the bushes , the diff bush looks a bit won but accel or decell isnt the problem , when I go over a bump or rut in the road the front suspension is smooth and quite but the rear clunks or knocks on something , ive gone over the boot annoying problem!

Drifter I am really sorry you are having that issue but thak Chr*st someone else is and I'm not going mad.

It is driving me insane and feels like the arse end of the car is gunna fall off.

I was intending on going over it on the weekend. I was thinking it was the bolts at the top of the shocks but I take it you found nothing out of the ordinary??

Man if you find the solution theres a beer in it for you and I'd even consider driving to bloody Newcastkle to buy it for you lol. :beerchug:

Sorry they did not fix it for you at Ford.

I still would be checking the diameter or the bolts. Or their placement in the upper mount. Even if they are tight does not mean they are sitting secure in the top. You should have the eyelet of the shock, your bush and a metal sleeve which the bolt goes through. The bolt should be a snug fit, and needs to be tight enough to push through the sleeve not drop through. Be sure to use a good quality grease on your bolt and sleeve.

When you top out on your shock, your suspension has a little movement at the top. If your bush in the shock is very stiff, it can also clunk as it finally turns as the suspension tops and moves. You will get a few clunks and groans put of performance suspension. But as in your case it was there before.

Other than this to save time in the big picture I would pull the whole shabangabang out, put it back together properly and stuff it back in.

because if it's not the suspension bolts, it can be lower or upper control arms, rear sway bar....the list goes on.

good luck.

Don't tighten your suspension to death either. You will just drasically shorten the life of your bushes or worse. "Loctite 243" should be your best friend when working on it. Not brute strength.
