What do they do in the states? I know they have a sh*t loads of wide highways but what do they do in terms of education?

They start driver ed. from the age of 14-15 at school. It is a compulsory class I believe. They go through all the basics in theory, practical and danger perception.

They were doing it when I went to school there in 1969, so if the gov is serious about saving lives then they ought to look at this.

But as I have been an adviser to the minister of transport here in QLD years ago and have brought this up so many times it's not funny, I would not hold your breath. I still put it down almost every month in my reports. BUT........

We cant even get the different states to agree on the bloody road rules, to make it a national system.

Let alone different governing bodies to agree and share a program. It's all about the dollar and for them it's still cheaper to let you fend for yourself.

We cannot blame the roads. Nor will the Gov ever admit it is the roads. That makes them or the contractors liable.

It's just common sense that if the roads are crap, don't drive out of your limits. Drive at a speed where you can drive out of anything.

A speed sign is the maximum you should travel at, if the road and weather conditions are good. Not what you have to keep up to in the pouring rain or fog. Sounds so stupid but people do.

A white speed sign is a mandatory limit. A yellow is an advisory and you can still travel at the posted speed limit. But if you come undone and were going faster than the advisory sign, then you better talk fast.

You can start now with your kids. If they can see you have to brake before you actually realise you do, then they get a point. Same as spotting the idiot at the round about who is just going to rush in and hope. Two points for the idiot if he does what an idiot does.

It's Just a matter of looking far anough ahead. You will almost always see the car and it's brake lights in front of you with your periphial vision. What you have to do is look well ahead of him or the car infront of him. Don't wait till the guy in front brakes, he could be the bloody idiot. And come to a sudden stop up someones ass. No matter how good you are it takes time to stop.

XR09 has some very good points. The roads aren't the issue it's peoples poor choices and judgement that cause most of the accidents.

It really amazes me that the Governments only response to a higher road toll is to introduce mobile speed cameras. Their results indicate that fixed speed cameras supposedly have reduced the road tolls so far but think introducing unmarked cameras is going to have an increased effect. Idiots

The double demerits was introduced and was seen to be the best thing since sliced bread when the toll was down. Now look at the stats. I can imagine the response though "But what would have been the toll if we didn't have double demerits".

To put it simply the government officer with the responsibility for road tolls has to take some sort of action to make it look like he/she is doing something so they can keep their job and this is the most simple and profiltable option they can come up with.

They need to realise they are going to have to spend money to make people drive more safely on the roads rather than make money. Education is the best solution I can see currently to make a difference.

And we can fix the roads.

Hello more speed cameras and look at your rego quadrupling to pay for them.

Oh and the traffic jams and detours. Loss of peoples homes, farms and lively hoods to put them somewhere safe.

We can have a perfect road, and noddy will still fall asleep, cross two lanes and an irrigation ditch to get you.

Nothing changes the fact that the Government themselves state that 50% of deaths are due to the roads. Its the media that's got us thinking we're always to blame. Just saw an article saying that only 25% of fuel tax goes back into road upkeep whereas in the States its 100%

American roads sh*t on ours in everyway imaginable

its pretty rough comparing us Aussie roads to US roads. Compare NSW to California. Cali has half the area, 5 times the population and The Terminator as governor whereas we have a half yank/half aussie chick who will be here today gone by the next election.

Driver education is the key IMHO. Our L plate and P plates are a joke. Proper driver training embedded in school would help heaps.

Victoria has one of the lowest road tolls to populations in the world, after a few crazy european places like sweden.. I wouldn't be looking to America for help..

The roads need work so that drivers can see what is coming.. no surprises.. otherwise good signage pointing out the issue would be a start..

Where do you guys get these figures of the Gov themselves blaming the roads. I have to read reams of their sh*t and never once have I seen it say it was due to the roads. They say "conditions" Not the road.

Some one from the opposition does not count, they are not in a place to fix it and wont when they become the power. They are protected by parliamentary privilege. Which means they can say what ever they want and do not have to accept responsibility for it.

I am not saying that our roads are good. Their crap. You try riding a bike on them.

At least in Vic they can fix a pothole close to being flush with the road surface. Here in QLD if its close to 50mm over it's a good job. And then by 12pm the next day its back to hot mix and the first truck over them empty all the crap and make the hole worse.
