Negative Boost/vacuum

56Mainline> The figures that have been quoted are as you should expect at idle and trailing throttle. With a manual car you can keep the vacuum up around 5"Hg or above if you drive for economy. However with an auto you will never have a vacuum reading except on trailing throttle because the torque convertor slips to 2000 rpm whenevr any throttle is applied which instantly gives boost ... so autos simply cannot give good economy but on the other side of the coin they are usually quicker to respond than a manual when the loud pedal is pushed.
