More Guesstimation...

The screen is probably 800x600, but I would think that it's set up to display a 720x576 picture as that's pretty much a native DV resolution. To me that makes some kind of sense. Worse case it would be a little 'framed'. Ofcourse we could be all wrong and the screen is really 640x480 - still not a major hurdle...

I've found a box that'll convert just about any inputed video signal (Composite, S-Vid, Component and VGA) into a 720x576 50Hz output. Or 60Hz...

At a guess the car is 50Hz but it doesn't matter - easy to overcome.

Yup the only 'hard' thing left to suss out is where the audio from the SATNAV ties in, and how. The interim method would be to simply use the Aux input connector that most would be plugging MP3 etc into.

Contrary to some sources - the Sat NAV Option in the BA is made by Denso Australia. http://www.denso.com.au

It's DVD based and is OEM only - bugger.

Ford will not install SatNav after build time - but I think that's only becuase it relies on either Premium audio being fitted or at the very least the premium Audio ICC display (which is what XTs get when Sat Nav is optioned). So it's too hard for Ford to make it a blanket option.

Ofcourse I wonder how much the system would cost from parts?

mmm Been reading what the Honduh boys are doing in the US, seems like it's possible to build a DIY overlay unit or even do IR input switching witht he setups in their cars - Barring signal differences between their panels and ours I think I can learn something off them.... Goes off to practice the funky hip teen kiddy speak used on Honduh forums...

I have More info:

The 4 inputs into the Premium ICC are:

AUX audio - the only Stereo input

Mobile Phone - Mono

NAV - Mono

Reverse - Mono - or rather a mode trigger type of arrangement and the beeping from rear is generated by the ICC system (perhaps)

Now they inputs may not be true mono - it could be that the input is being applied across a pair of channels - they're listed as +, - and ground which could be used as L,R, Ground like the AUX input.

I have got wiring info for the AUX and it's activation now.

Will hopefully work out a 'cheap' input lead diagram soon and have pics and samples...

FYI

I rang Audiotech in Belconnen(ACT) today to get the Blaupunkt dvd installed but they won't have any of the players until the end of the month. Also, they said it can be installed in the boot or in the console where the tissues are for easy cd chenge. Takes about 1/2 a day and I was quoated $1499 + $300 labour.

The $300 labour soulds like abit of wallet rape - it depends though - Just how much of the 'kit' from Blaupunkt is really a kit, or simply wiring instructions.

I can tell you all the tricky overlay stuff is done by the ICC, not by anything else. You also 'loose' you AUX plug-in as that's what the feed the audio into.

Overall they'd need to be tapping the AUX audio plug-in (5 wires) and the ICC Navi display input (6 wires from memory) and then do a simple check for handbrake on (1 wire) to make ther system work. At the end of the day it's not that hard but if they're doing it like that - piece by piece without plug-in components then fair enough I can imagine 3 hours of work there.

I think that's why they're not selling a Navi interface Box though - becuase there isn't one. From what I'm learning from teh yanks wif da sik honduhs is that they integrate a multiway electronic signal convertor/switcher into the panels and audio and then feed their multiple inputs (DVD, Navigation, Xbox etc) into the switch unit.... And so on....

Would love to see the Blue setup before, during or after it's installed to confirmt he theory though...

I'm just pasting below a big post I made of at FordMods.com - it sorta outlines why I'm interested in all this stuff, and is kinda written as a reaction to the ... "In a few months the Blau peopel will have a $180 interface available" info that people are claiming....

It's a _long_ term project idea... I'm not about to throw cash at it - rather a motivation to get the groundwork (wiring design theory backed up with fact) in place first ;)

---

While Blau are only packaging the 'Multimedia Interface' which sounds more and more like a 20ish wire loom kit for a Stereo installer to DIY and a basic signal convertor (S-Sid/Composite to RGB) than anythign else from what I've read I think there's a plenty of good reasons for research in this area fro DIY to continue. An interesting array of things can be achieved... Think about a remote controlled modified XBOX in the boot, using the IR Xbox remote to play back DVD/DIVX/MP3s, oops I think I just gave my game plan away.. *sighs* And ofcourse being able to upload 120Gb of media to the car via 802.11b or from laptop in cabin etc is definately not all bad ;)

The Screen is 60Hz, RGB input TFT - ie it's a 'computer' based screen not a 'tv' type of screen. This means 60Hz base signal or in other words NTSC or PAL60 input.

There are widgets around to swap between those signal types - even ones with fully configuarable options and on-screen displays..

The ICC handles the display overlay features inside itself. It displays the Navigation input onscreen when a line is pulled low, and the screens primary display functions are activated as an overlay for 5s after any ICC fucntion is used/adjusted - ie just like the 'display blanking' feature

Navigation audio is a MONO input in the ICC/stereo as an 'overlay'. The Blau system (and any home brew system) has to use the AUX audio input as it's the only Stereo input available.

I'm not dissing the Blau product - I think it's great they're putting a solution out there, but I think it's simply not as sofisticated on their part as it first sounds. ie most of the fancy stuff is done in the ICC...

My _long_ term goal is to have all the gear stashed in the boot, use the factory fitted IR receiver to manage the control signal for multiple devices, and have them displayed on screen in a 'legal' manner (only when car is parked.

Xbox is a good platorm for the car as the IDE HDD drive can be replaced with a more vibration tolerance than a stocko IDE drive. The 'fickle DVD-RONM can be replaced with a off the shelf unit for normal media usuage (not gaming). The power supply can be one of the DC-DC convertor computer units that teh Car PC guys are keen on and the audio output can be configured for an appropriate signal. The whole thing can hang under the parcel shelf, and not be seen......

Am I nuts?

Probably ;)

You're most probably right. But I can't do it myself. And hey, I just want a DVD player in my car, whatever it takes and as quick as possible. Its either buy this or a new lounge(looks around for missus). I'm still very interested to read all the info you have, keep up the good work.
