By the way you could always do a driver defensive course. Here they're held in police youth centres, and about 90% of the people who go were made to by a magistrate for serious driving offences. I went to one (voluntarily) and got a 90 day suspension knocked down to 30 days. But, its a 10 week course, 2 hours per session, and you cant skip any classes. Still glad I went, it was a real eye-opener. Had cops, ambo drivers, serious crash victims etc.. come each week and talk to the class.

Yeah this desperate defence has popped up a few times. It did get a real good flogging in a recent retained readings thread.

A few years ago I got booked on a country road by a car mounted radar. I was fairly sure I was doing about 118. Definitely under 120. But the officer said I was doing 126. It didn't make a difference to the fine or demerit points lost so I didn't bother taking it anywhere. There are discrepancies in actual and detected speeds.

I saw 2 cops at Long Reef (Collaroy) using a hand held gun, I was going roughly 70 in the 60 zone but I'm sure my hilux reads high. Straight away I started thinking about what was said in this thread about asking what range they got me and noted they were NOT using a tripod. anyways, they let me drive straight past...

Look, to give my opinion. The speed limits are there, stick to them or get busted. Its your choice.

d rangd, if you think that having a bit of fun in a back street is safe, then you are wrong. Mate if you want to have fun like that, then go to the track and take it up there. Only for the sake of your life, becuase honestly, any kind of collision over 50km/h on impact, can severely do spinal damage and even cause death. Just because theres no other people or cars around, doesn't mean its safe to be a dickhead. Sorry if I sound a bit harsh, but Ive had my share of incidents with people like this.

Also craginmackay, it was very nice of you to go through my whole post, break it up and point out all the parts you thought were wrong, honestly. But mate give it up, the road rules are there, and personaly I agree that if the limits were raised, then the fatalities due to fatigue would drop, but the fatalaties occuring due to speed, would increase. Only for the fact that our roads are not set up for such a speed. So either way, we lose.

And you know what mate, they do save lives. Because you think, the stopping distance is greatly increased when the speed increases, thus making it harder to miss pedestrians, other motorists, animals, and other hazards.

Every one is entitled to their opinion, and this is just mine. My opinion is that speed limits do save lives and yes I would like the speed limit raised on highway/country roads, but who the hell sticks to the current speed limit, and if it was raised then no one would stick to that either.

mate im saying its safer for other people. driving a car itself isnt 'safe' if you want to be a granny, bloody LIVING kills you for fks sake. if I want to go out of my way to a industrial estate and have a bit of a fang I think it should be looked on less harshly, and more specifically, police shouldnt go out of there way to get you there. but yeah id LOVE to be able to go to the track every time I feel the desire for some butterflys in my stomach...just not a simple quick fix that it should be

FWIW I've also heard purely anecdotally, and it's not just speeding but also drink driving, that sometimes people with 'borderline' cases are let off so that the statistics look better; to show that policies to 'reduce fatalities' are actually working.

I'm pretty sure most of the last 2 pages has very little to do with, in any specific sense, the OP, but oh well!

There is no doubt that some of the stats are manipulated for an intended purpose. Road deaths as the result of suicide are no longer counted in the annual toll as one example.

There's always going to be those who drop their pants and bend over for the cops/Government policies and have a "Give it to me hard" attitude. These are the same people who get all high and mighty when others dare to stand up for themselves.
