So I lined up at some traffic lights next to an SS ute with obvious work done. Looked around, nothing but general motorists around us and an old bush ute behind me. These lights lead into a 80 zone and eventually into a 100 zone, so its a good spot for some spur of the moment fun. Being that I havn't really lined up the T against anything worthy of mention, I figured I'd see how it would go....

Lights green, punched it...so did the SS driver.. side by side throught 1st, 2nd gear, he edges ahead at the top of second... shifted to third and the T pulls away nicely, grab fourth and creat a bigger gap and the race is done. He hasnt a hope anymore. I hit the picks at 140ish and back down to 100 hit cruise and relax. The SS driver is grinning and waves before he turns off the highway. Feeling pretty happy about the performance of the car I drive on for another 10 mins.

Soon that old bush ute catches up and sits 2m off my rear bumper. Two bushy looking blokes are inside. One flips down the sun visor and Red and Blue LEDS lights flash. It looked so fake that I laughed and ignored it thinking someone is tyring to scare me... the lights go off..I relax...... moments later, the lights go on again, he is beeping his horn this time... the car headlights are also falshing... he motions for me to pull over, so I comply.

Its an old 80 series landcruiser ute, with a white shabby canopy, dirty and rusty bodywork, old spotlights on the front bullbar... One of the guys jumps out wearing blue king-gee workgear, slowly walks over... I am still thinking its a joke until I see the QPS logo on his notebook...

In the usual deep and emotionless yet intimidating police tone he simply asks for my licence, and if I own the car. The other bloke gets out and stands at my window smiling:

"had fun back there? what were you doing?"

" I was being an idiot I guess..." I replied

"hmmm... an idiot eh? Is that what you'd call it? Let the little man do the thinking eh? ........How many points do you have?"

"all 12..." I said truthfully.. hanging my head in shame.. my gut had now sunk, my mind was racing trying to recall what level of fine this constitutes...whether 12 points is enough..

"All of them?!!...hmmm.."

Then the questions included what I do for a living, is it my car again, age etc etc...

"That looked alot like street racing back there..."

I'm shaking my head in regret... "yes...you could ceratainly say that."

"We are everywhere these days, you never know what car we will be in..."

"that's why I didnt pull over the first time, I couldn't believe an old cruiser ute was a traffic cop car.." I replied.

"Do we look like traffic cops to you?" He said.. I took them both in for a second...both in civilian clothes, workboots, unshaven, dark sunnies, hard looks on their faces... The other guy is now taking all the details of my car and licence into his notebook.

"well.. no"

"We still have the power to book you, write you a ticket. For street racing, we will tow your car, make you walk around for a few months. What are we going to do here?"

I'd given up hope by now..."write me a ticket I suppose or tow me.. I deserve it.. you caught me right in the act... I'm done." Still shaking my head in shame..

"We are not going to write you a ticket today. This is a nice car, you need to watch your speed from here on in, you never know where we will be, do you understand?"

"Yes I do. Very much so...Thankyou very much for that."

"Watch your speed. See you later."

I drive away gently.. thanking God I wasnt walking home... that's my wake up call. Wont be doing that again...

Its not often you get let off doing 140 in an 80 zone while street racing... that was my one chance. No more.

IIRC (and i think i do) If an UMARKED vehicle attempts to pull you over you are within your rights to procede to the nearest police station if you feel the car may not be legit. Of course you must drive obeying all road rules.

Sounds like a coupe of good ol boys out to upset some hoons.....

Nup. Real cops. Badges, ID, QPS notebooks, radios. the works.

Also the cars front headlamps flashed one after the other, not together. No country boys are going to wire up the headlights to do that for a bit of fun. Also, I have to pass the police station to get to my house, they were a few cars behind me and I saw them pull in.

I was pulled over in a high vis area, on a main drag, they left all the flashing lights on the entire time they were talking to me.

No it is not as you are obligated to stop when directed to do so. Ive seen this advice on here before, but although I understand the difficulty, following this advice will get you arrested even if your first to the police station. If you fail to stop for them, they will pursue you and arrest you and there is no other reasonable way out of it. Considering the advice is to follow the road rules, it is likely to be a low speed pursuit, where you will be roadspiked and lose all 4 tyres.

JUst sounds real dodgy all round!

When I finally pulled over, I had it in gear and was very sus. I didnt let my window down until I saw his badge and notebook in his hand as he was walking over. This was on a very busy street, a section where traffic cops always patrol, people everywhere. If they were fakes, the chances of being caught impersonating a police officer was extremely high. The joke would not be worth the risk.

I drove about 2km sussing it all out before I pulled over. I told him they looked fake, especially when they turned the lights off again behind me. He said that they turned them off on that stretch as it was a dangerous area to pull over, they waited till there was room again, which was certainly true.

If the headlights didnt flash one after the other, I wouldnt have pulled over. I would have driven to the police station and risked arrest.
