Hey fellas, quick question, I dunno if its normal in these turbos or not, but im abit worried none the less.

I have an 04 ba mk2 XR6 Turbo ute. It has a herrod motorsport exhaust system and the car is Automatic 4sp. Yesturday I had my center muffler removed on that exhaust as the exhaust was that quiet that I couldnt even hear it. I still have the rear muffler attached. I bought the car with the herrod exhaust already on the car. So I wanted to make the car abit louder so I took the muffler out. but what iv noticed is when im at quite high rpm just before the automatic changes gears, I get a heap of exhaust pops. Its only ever when I really plant my foot on the floor. Im guessing this was happening before I had the muffler taken off, just couldnt hear it.. Is this normal for turbo xr6 cars or is the something goin bad with the car. It only happens at high rpm when my foot is still to the floor. Cheers fellas

yeh I had an idea that was what it was. im getting a capa custom tune soonish so hopefully that will fix the issue, I also have a slight flat spot in the turbo when it pops aswell, so hopefully the tune fixes that. might be the fuel and air ratio is out. fingers crossed. cheers bud,

Grant

Grunt6,

I'm guessing that your issue is tune related. Definately need to get in for a custom tune.

Rhino,

Your car will be making the burrp noise on shifts due to the spark retard on gear shifts to protect the gearbox. Great sound and turns heads.

The FG's actually cut spark to a number of cylinders at peak RPM gear changes and this causes a popping sound. Was a big write-up on this in motor/wheels magazine when the FG's were first released.

Guys he's got a BA, no spark retardation as far as I know. It was introduced in FG. It might be over boosting and pinging due to a free flowing exhaust.

I'd recommend taking it for a tune as soon as possible and in the mean time keep it in the lower half of the rev range, otherwise you risk it going bang.
